Jay's General Comments: The Chicago area has many good lakes to fish. Deep Lake is the type of lake where you feel like you are on a Saturday morning fishing show. Very scenic, great structure, fairly clear water, and good numbers of gamefish. Largemouth bass, northern pike, crappie, "bull" bluegill, Deep Lake has it all. This is the place where you get up at 4am, get your gear together, and head on out to meet your buddies for an early morning fishing outing. Deep Lake is a 200 acre glacier lake and totally natural. Stocking has been few and far between, but this lake is such a good habitat, the reproduction rate ensures good fishing year after year. No boat launching is available. No shore fishing access.  Jack and Lidia's offers boat rentals, gas motor rentals, and nightcrawlers. Contact them at 847-356-1389.

Deep Lake Hot Spots:

Deep Lake is a great place to use a variety of classic fishing lures. By this, I mean that all the fishing lures you see on the television shows and all the fishing lures you've seen in your father's tackle box are what to use here. Deep Lake has some of the best structure and variety of weed conditions for all fishing lures. Everything from top-water lures to plastic worms, this is a place where you can really learn how to use fishing lures effectively to catch more and bigger fish.

Hot Spot 1: The North Bay

Jack & Lidia's opens at 6am. This is the spot I hit first. During the summer months, there are some dense weeds, but excellent pockets which hold bass and northern pike. Work plastics in the pockets and against the shoreline.Senkos and Texas-rigged worms work best. Work all the way back to the inlet as well. Carp are all over the place, but don't get distracted by them. A popper-type bait in the pockets or a weedless frog type bait accross the pads can be deadly as well.

Hot Spot 2: The Sandbar

This area along the west shoreline is another good bass location. Carolina rigged worms, Senkos, and Rapala Husky-Jerk baits worked parallel to the sandbar are my top choices.

2006 Deep Lake Fishing Reports:

Report: July 4, 2006 -- Jason W. Norris
Fished Deep Lake from 6am-noon; sunny; temps around 80, NE winds 5-10mph.

The early morning started off with great conditions - water was completely calm and Augy got on a longnose gar with a Rapala Skitter Prop along the west shore. Freaky as hell! But Augy was very brave in handling the fish. The fish was about 35 inches. Soon after he got a decent 12" largemouth bass.

Then around 7:15am the conditions changed - the humidity went away and a northeast breeze kicked in. That basically shut the fish down. I caught a... well, let's just say I did not get skunked. The pictures tell the story...

Report: July 2, 2006 -- Jason W. Norris
Fished Deep Lake from 6:30pm-9:30pm; temps around 80; west winds 10mph/diminishing; sunny.

Not a bad evening. 5 largemouth bass total, 4 by Augy (nice job for 1st time at Deep Lake, dude!)

Dark color Senko's were the key! I threw several bright color Slug-go's, chatterbait, tournament frog with no results. Lost a BIG bass on a black Power Worm. But Augy went with the purple 5" Senko and that got the job done. His biggest fish were 18" and 19".

The action really started once all the "recreation" was done on the water. Worked along the west shore sandbar and just south of "The Point" in the shallows for the bass.

2005 Deep Lake Fishing Reports:

Report: August 13, 2005 -- Jason W. Norris

Cloudy, temps in the low 70's, NE winds calm - 10mph. Fished from 6am-11:30pm. 18 total largemouth bass between the 3 of us. Statred in the north bay with nothing . Moved to the point and landed a couple of nice ones on top-water popper baits. Then the south shoreline produced several nice bass on plastic worms. Of the 18 total bass, 12 were between 15"-17". Great outing.

Report: June 11, 2005 -- Jason W. Norris

Great day. Temps in 80's, southwest winds 15mph, mostly sunny. Fished from 6:30am-11:30am. Between Russ, Rich, and myself, we managed over 12 bass with at least 8 being keepers. Rich landed the largest bass at 19.5 inches. The best action was early in the north bay on plastic worms fishing shallow. Rich also caught an 18 inch bass by the point. Also got a few more bass on the south shoreline fishing shallow. Got a few bluegill of nice size as well, but no bull bluegill.
