Lasalle Lake Super Slam (3/18/15)

Postby Bobba Down » Mar Wed 18, 2015 8:47 pm

Took the trip out to Lasalle this afternoon. Fished from about 1:30p - 5:00p. It was a long bike ride on loose gravel to get past the crowds, but it turned out to be worth it. Travelled past a lot of stripers on stringers. Probably 90% of shore anglers were using chicken livers. Successfully too it seemed. Lots of cats, good number of stripers from what I saw on the ride out.

Finally got past the crowd. Started throwing rattle traps and blade baits, like everyone else. Maybe 20 mins.. nada. Found a new spot, and first cast with a gulp minnow I hooked up with about a 5 lb striper. It was game on for the next 2 hours.

Ended up with well over 20 fish on the outing. Best part is, maybe only 5 of those fish were those pesky little channel cats, and only one token silver bass. The rest were a mix of : stripers, largemouth, smallmouth, walleye, and blue cats.

Biggest largemouth was about 3 lbs. During the fight, right at my feet, a solid 4lber tried taking the gulp minnow from its mouth. Of course when I flip back in to try and find her, she was gone... :x
Also lost a real heart breaker of a striper to a bent hook. But that's the trade off unfortunately to a light wire hook. Fewer break offs, but the occasional lost big fish...

Walleye were a pleasant surprise. I have heard guys have been catching them this year. Saw a guy trolling catch one right in front of me, and later ended up with 3 myself. 12-14" but it's a start.

Highlight of my trip was catching : a striper, largemouth, smallmouth, walleye, blue cat, channel cat, and a St Croix rod paired with a Johnny Morrison reel, all while standing on the same rock. A true Super Slam!!!

I'll be back out tomorrow am

Very sweet!

Using a bike is a great idea. More should do it. I've turned probable lakefront perch skunkings into limits of jumbos often because of having the ability to move around on a bike. Towing a kayak with a bike is great too. Congrats.

Man that's great stuff. I haven't been to Lasalle in SO long. They used to have a van service that would shuttle shore anglers around but I don't think it's around anymore. Any idea how far you rode your bike? Is it walkable?

Round trip, it was over 6 miles to where I was catching fish. Today however, I would have been better off fishing with the crowds in the first 3/4 of a mile of shoreline. They spanked me. I'll post a report later, but best action seemed closer to the parking lot. Definitely walkable, but a bike keeps you mobile to move when you need t .

Holy cow, it has literally been about 20 years since I have heard of Walters coming out of there. Fantastic outing. I was off 3 days during the week and could not find time to go. Definitely missed out on the hot bite.

Nice report with the update as well. I take it they are pumping now. I heard on opening day they weren't pumping. Those are some nice fish. I've gone the last few years with in a couple of weeks of opening day and for me it was tough. So nice to a killer report with variety no less. I might just have to go out there bike and all. Thanks for sharing since there haven't been other reports to be noted.
I wasn't aware that there were walleye in there. Maybe a new stocking. I'd think those things would have a tough time when the water really starts heating up. Hope they can hold up along with the other predators.
To fish or not to fish......that's a stupid question.

Walleye are a great find out there - at this point either they are dumping in the leftovers from the hatchery in there and not counting it as a stocking or they are reproducing. Either way great job.
