LaSalle 3/18

Postby FishinMatt » Mar Sun 18, 2018 6:49 pm

Slimed the boat up with the kids today. 48 cats (a few blues mixed in) and 2 largies. Simple setup of a small float, couple of split shots, and fathead or roach. My oldest had one on for about 5 minutes that we never saw. Eventually she handed the pole to me and I finally had it a few feet from the boat and the hook popped out (nice job Dad). A rare day today with hardly any wind out there. What A great place for kids to reel them in one after another. Water was 48 and the launch, and 74 were we stopped to fish on the north side of the second dike.

I'm jealous. Not of the fish, anyone can catch fish. Jealous of having cool, smiley kids that love to fish.

Way to get the kids on that fast action. And way to work in between channel cat piles to find a few blues and larrys.

Thanks guys. Kids had the clicker going to count the fish which was fun. We ran out of bait right around 50. I soaked some bigger baits a little deeper, but only one small blue to show for it.

Nice day!! Looks like a blast was had

Is LaSalle easy to fish from shore for cats? Might make a trip out there if the cat fishing is good

Phil, the obstacle you may face is the coldest water is at your point of access. I used to bring a bike to get down to the warmer areas. There were a ton of guys shorefishing the colder pool yesterday, but I don't know their results. As far as where we were getting bit, literally 3-6 feet off the riprap. If you want fast action, just find 70-80 Water and you can catch the smaller channel cats all day with the occasional blue cat mixed in.

Does that mean you have to head down the paths that extend into the lake? Not sure I follow as I dont know the layout/depths of the lake

Check out a topo map online which will show you the parking lot, 3 pools, and dikes. To get to the center dike I would recommend a bike as it is a few miles.

Also, there really is only one path to get out to where you can fish. There is no scenery at all out there. Just rip rap shoreline and a LONG path.

Thanks Matt, how big is the average channel in there? Do 10lb+ get pullled out often? Never pulled a blue before either

Channels are generally small 1/2-1lb with the occasional bigger one. I run into at least a few blues every trip. Lots of YouTube vids out there with monster blues too.

Nice job Matt. Always good to see youngsters enjoying the outdoors.

I haven't been to Lasalle in a few years, last time I was there I popped a tire on the boat trailer from a deep shit hole at the far right ramp.

^ Man oh man..... That thing might be solely responsible for the non existent walleye fishery there, and it probably eats a 4lb bass for breakfast lunch and dinner. We use 8inch bull heads to catch 5lb channel cats when I cat fish. I guess you need to bait up 16inch carp for that blue whale
