Local camp out at Chain O Lakes SP

Postby polishfly » Jun Sun 23, 2019 6:38 pm

Since building the camper I have found it hard to do anything but camp on the weekends and I really have no regrets about that. I got out this weekend with Zenfish for a quick “rainy” campout at Chain O Lakes State Park. Weather showed rain all weekend but the only rain occurred Sunday night and ended before we woke up. It was perfect camping weather!

We decided to take it easy and make fishing a bonus to the campout which was the primary focus. That meant hitting little Lake Turner inside of the park (didn’t require a chain waterway sticker) and we were treated to our own crystal clear glacial lake all day. Bass were aggressive and hitting sunfish colored swimbaits and frogs but the mouths were oddly small and none took a frog enough to hook into. Mike got a really nice one at 18” or just a bit more and I got the numbers. We found them everywhere from hugging the shoreline to the “deep end” at 10 feet. Same story: sungill colored Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper (hands down my favorite swimbait).

This lake isn’t much of a destination but if you’re looking for a quick campout to test equipment or just get out of the house for a weekend this was a really nice park to do that in. Its huge with lots of trails and picnic areas too. The sites we camped in were fairly secluded with sections of woods between sites, cheap, and I was able to find and book a site fairly last minute which is not too common anymore.

If you’re interested in more on the camper I post a bunch on Instagram with username tantotrailers and Facebook as well! In November I will be building an off-road 10x5 foot version for Overlanding.

I might have said this before but I love what you are doing. Camping, grilling, kayaking, and fishing- that makes for a helluva weekend! Thanks for the post.
I love the smell of Powerbait in the morning!

I avoid the chain and its unsightly shoreline, booze cruisers, and overall bad scenery, but that picture of your campsite is quite tranquil. Nice pictures and report.

Great post. Takes me back to when my scout troop camped at Chain O Lakes. Sometimes we camped at what used to be a separate SP - Oak Point. I think it's a day use area now.
Keep calm and fish on...

There's a fine line between fishing and just sitting there looking stupid

Such a beauty of a lake and some nice secluded campsites I did some quick trips with kids when younger. Good to see it's bouncing back from the fish kill several years ago.

Cool as hell. All of it. Never realized just how diminutive your camper was until seeing you sitting next to it, sorry but it’s cute as hell. Probably don’t want to hear that but yeah...

Cute has been thrown around once or twice but I'll take positive compliments regardless! The wide angle lens makes the trailer look smaller and myself look bigger in that picture but it indeed is small. 6'6" of room inside the cabin with a 1'6" rear galley for kitchen/food/storage makes up the 8x5' space I enjoy living in more than my townhouse. Sitting here today without a campout planned this weekend is kinda depressing so I was already looking at places in Whitewater to camp so I can get on the mountain bike. If I could I would live in it full time, not even kidding. My sleeping setup is so damn comfortable I can't get a better night's sleep at home.
