Since building the camper I have found it hard to do anything but camp on the weekends and I really have no regrets about that. I got out this weekend with Zenfish for a quick “rainy” campout at Chain O Lakes State Park. Weather showed rain all weekend but the only rain occurred Sunday night and ended before we woke up. It was perfect camping weather!
We decided to take it easy and make fishing a bonus to the campout which was the primary focus. That meant hitting little Lake Turner inside of the park (didn’t require a chain waterway sticker) and we were treated to our own crystal clear glacial lake all day. Bass were aggressive and hitting sunfish colored swimbaits and frogs but the mouths were oddly small and none took a frog enough to hook into. Mike got a really nice one at 18” or just a bit more and I got the numbers. We found them everywhere from hugging the shoreline to the “deep end” at 10 feet. Same story: sungill colored Reaction Innovations Skinny Dipper (hands down my favorite swimbait).
This lake isn’t much of a destination but if you’re looking for a quick campout to test equipment or just get out of the house for a weekend this was a really nice park to do that in. Its huge with lots of trails and picnic areas too. The sites we camped in were fairly secluded with sections of woods between sites, cheap, and I was able to find and book a site fairly last minute which is not too common anymore.
If you’re interested in more on the camper I post a bunch on Instagram with username tantotrailers and Facebook as well! In November I will be building an off-road 10x5 foot version for Overlanding.
