Our spring break trip to New Orleans obviously got canceled. On top of that my wife, who is a physician, got asked to cancel her vacation to participate in the emergency response to Covid-19 happening in Michigan.
I thought about cancelling my vacation too but with the kids off from their (now virtual school) I decided to take some time off to spend with them, support the wife, and do some local fishing.
Day 1 - cold day fishing canal off of a popular local lake for panfish. Presentation was fishing Swedish pimples tipped with waxies under a float around docks. Had great success catching giant gill after giant gill, probably 30+ between 8-10, never seen anything like it. Kept around 20 for dinner.
Day 2 - repeat of day 1 but took a couple rods rigged with swim baits too. Goby jr hooks into a monster in the canal. It stays down digging forever, whatever it is is huge. Finally it surfaces and it is a big long day walleye. We didn’t bring a net and start to get nervous. There are a couple nice guys fishing in a boat in the same canal about 15 feet away. They see what is going on and one makes a perfect long throw of his net to me. I scoop the fish for the win!
We went out into a bay off the main lake and did some more casting. The wind died down and it was really calm. Goby Jr. caught two bass and a decent pike to round out an epic day of fishing.
Day 3 - repeat of day 1 but we catch some big crappie around 15” or so in the mix. I think if we had minnows we could have caught more.
Day 4 - we go chasing suckers, walleye, and steal head on some Lake Erie tribs. We underestimated how high the rivers were after a big weekend rain and took the skunk. Oh well, can’t win them all.
Day 5 - fish a local pond from shore, a few small bass and a few more giant crappie.
Day 6 - fished from shore and canoe at my friends lake house which can be magic in the spring. We arrived to find more 10-12 inch bass along the shore than I’ve ever seen. We probably caught 50 in two hours with some more big
Crappie and a half dozen bigger 2-3 pound bass mixed in. No pike though.
