I’m out here in Oregon visiting an old friend and yesterday we took a trip to the Rogue River to try for steelhead. Ton of rain came through on Wednesday and the air temp dropped about 20 degrees which is par for the course many times.
We did a half day trip with a guide. Really nice guy who tried hard to get us on fish but it wasn’t happening yesterday. The season regulations changed 2 weeks ago so now it’s fly fishing only. I’m sure if we were able to use roe or lures we would have put more fish in the boat.
We fished out of his drift boat and did a combination of drifting, anchoring, and wading. The water is really moving so how those fish can find those flies is a mystery to me.
We got 3 small natural rainbows and one natural steelhead that was about 6 pounds. Couldn’t keep the steelhead because the natural steelhead must be released immediately.
Never the less I had a blast. The drift boat is awesome. That thing cruises right through the rapids and our guide knew exactly where to position it to maneuver through some pretty hairy spots. Scenery was great and even those little rainbows were cool looking. If I lived out here I would be on that water constantly.
Even though the fishing was slow I still enjoyed my time especially sharing it with my old high school best friend.
Only took a few pictures and right now I’m waiting for my friend to text me the picture of his steelhead so when he does I’ll add it to this post.
