6/20-21-22/19 Staycation WALLEYE and bass

Postby Busse Jim » Jun Sun 23, 2019 1:40 am

Thursday last day of spring

3:30-sunset, Cloudy, low 70s to start, almost 3’ vis, NW-NE 5-10 mph. And a mostly empty lake!
Day started out like another wasted vacation day.

Moved around in 3 areas today, tossed a frog in the weeds, a few different crankbaits in the open, and spinners in both. after 2 ½ hours of nothing, found a few fish in the third. First fish hit a crankbait on a splashdown, an 8” bass, lost a bass on the frog but stuck the next , a 15” 1.8 lber, and lost another.

But my last fish of spring 2019 was a doozy! :D
Not ChiCityYaker Big, but it’s been 10 years since I got one this heavy. Crook county lakes can sure kick out some nice eyes from time to time.

Switching back and forth from frogging the mat and slow cranking the open water edges, the crank gets positively slammed! The med. Light rod just doubles over. As I rear back, and start reeling the head shaking starts, This fish was strong, that rod was bouncing up and down as I’m muscling it in. halfway in I get my first view of this monster eye before it dives for the 8’ depth. Finally get it to the boat.

Now I have to sit down to grab the net with one hand and try to control the eye with the other and she kept diving deep as I’d get the net close, pulling the doubled over rod tip to the water and peeling off some line, couldn’t lift the rod higher to pull it in, had to drop the net twice to use both hands to reel and lift her back up. What a fight! Seven or eight missed tries then in the net, whew! Here she is

So hard to not post this Thursday night, but since I scheduled 2 vacation days week’s ago and I was fishing both days and maybe the weekend, Figured I’d delay it and keep THE WALLEYES all to myself. Hope you understand :sarcasm:

Friday-first day of summer, 2nd day of staycation

3pm-sunset, cloudy, low 70s to start, great vis, east winds 10-15, mostly empty lake again.
Had High hopes for walleye 3 rods with nothing but crankbaits to start, never even tied on a spinnerbait the rest of the weekend. :P

1st area gave up nothing so I trolled a few sections of the channels and picked up a 13” 1.1 bass on the crank, not what I was looking for but ok.
IMG_5649[1].JPG

Letting the winds push me down a channel casting a fat rap got me a 15 ½” 1.8 lb bass, still not what I’m looking for, but fine. :eh:
IMG_5650[1].JPG

Cruised to yesterday’s honey spot, and quickly boated a 14” 1.4 lb bass on the crank. OK, if that’s the way it’s gonna be so be it.
IMG_5651[1].JPG
Switched the least productive crank for a frog and “crashed” a weed mat I’d never ever frogged before. (didn’t start frogging till 2012). And the fun/ Hell began!

Went 1/15 !! :x With more than half solid hits with fights into the weeds, twice I even dragged bass thru 20’ of weeds only to land 10lbs of weeds without the bass. Boated # 6 and he was a real nice 17” 2.9lber. This 1st picture might explain why so many lost bass. Busse Weeds!

Jason paddles up and we eventually head across the lake to end the day, we both nail a bass, mine a 10” dink, then I finally get what I came for , a 17” 1,6 lb walleye. :D

Saturday day 3

3:30 – sunset, upper 70s to start, mostly sun to full clouds with a sprinkle, east winds 15-20. Still great vis. And the lake was packed!!

Frogged first hour in the sun then moved to last walleye spot from my past still haven’t hit and quickly get a 17’ 1.8lb walleye and just as quickly was encroached upon by the three yaks that saw me catch it, still landed a 15” 2.0 lb bass despite them. :P

Noticed the time and realized I was supposed to meet Jason. Found him where I caught the big gal, He’d already caught a 17” eye. But the clouds moved in gave us a sprinkle, and the lake seemed to shut down , at least till sunset. Jason scored a baby eye and went one way eventually trying the spot I caught today's eye in , catching a 17' walleye and I went another way. With no luck.

Sunset approaching , start packing up but kept two cranks on and trolled the channel coming in, and stuck an 18” 2.2 lb walleye half way in! :D

2 walleye and a bass today, no frog action at all.

3 consecutive 5 hour outings for 8 bass and 3 average walleyes and a beast, plus 16 missed frog opportunities and a few others on the cranks

Impressive eyes Jim! We know the stats tell us it's an excellent walleye lake but catching them is a whole other story. LOL

Love that dink picture, like someone shrink-rayed your usual bass! I call those bass that come in with twice their weight in weed Rasta Bass, they come in wearin' dreadlocks. :D

But on to the serious pics... damn... you really have a talent for snaggin the Busse Eyes, they even come to you on the way back! Heh. Great stuff.

I keep zooming in on those Teeth from the last walleye! Still amazes me after all these years that those teeth won't cut my braid
Knock on wood

I believe walleye don't have serrated teeth like pike and musky that's why you're ok with no leader.

Good job Wally-Jim. Did you really keep it since you called it keeper size? How did it taste if so? Not too fussed about you keeping but am interested if you did cook/eat. Good report.

Nah, keeper is just what CCFPD calls a fish you can legally keep at busse. I've just use it as a measuring stick for a nice bass, eye, pike, or ski.
I've only kept and eaten 2 bass and 2 walleyes over my busse years, in the late 90s( tastier cause i caught it), everything else hopefully has lived to get bigger and be caught again (if its really stupid)

100% correct Mike, but they will still draw blood like an esox if you get your fingers too close
