2019 Trout Season - April 6

Postby badger75 » Mar Fri 08, 2019 9:02 am

Checked the IL DNR website this week for info - no update. So this morning I went past Blackwell FP. Sign is up - Trout Season opens April 6.

Nahhhh. We got a little warm streak coming and if we can throw rain in there it'll be ice out in no time. Particularly the bigger lakes.

57 next Thursday. DPR will be unfishable for some time to come. All the ice stacked up in the woods along it will melt & things will get messy right quick.

Yes. As Rambler said, stay away from the DPR until its safe and easier to access. I wouldn't go anywhere near that river.....

Fished Silver lake today from 6 till 9:30am. Nothing. Not even a single bite. Bummer!

Didn't post about my annual trip out to White Pines last Wed. for the 'fly fishing only' C&R week.

The wind was a bitch that played havoc with my back cast. Tried putting tiny splitshots on the line but no matter how hard I smashed them with my pliers they would only stay on for half a dozen casts. Other folks caught some nice trout - saw one guy catch one that probably weighed 4 lbs. I took a good skunking.

Also, it seems that the whole 'fly fishing only' thing has been dumped by the DNR. There were quite a few people using spinning gear. I asked a local guy about it & he told me the DNR had given up on it. Hmm...

After fishing several hours I packed it in & headed to the S branch of the Kish to try for smallies with spinning gear. Got skunked there too but lost a couple of nice lures.

Sat by the river for a bit before heading back to the car and listened to a barred owl hooting in the woods across the river. It made the trials and tribulations of the day well worth it.

I too got the skunk 6-8am. I did not see one fish caught. Although the FOG did cut down on visibility. Normally you hear some splashes or some hooting about a catch - nada.

I know Fishdank was at Pratt Wayne and got some casting. He started sending me photo texts at 630am, lol. He releases them too, much to the chagrin of the surrounding anglers.
Nature and shit.

You gotta get that line speed up. Long and fast haul on your back cast...nice and easy on the forward cast if the wind is at your back. Opposite of it’s in your face. Laying it down softly is sometimes just not an option in wind.

I arrived in the rain and left in the rain... same storm you hit I'd guess. Luckily the between time was 90% dry... but hte bad news is that the whole time was 100% free of bites  At least on my hooks

It was my experience on Saturday. Did not see any action at all.
At least weather was nice.
