LOL- I'll let you know by the end of the year. I just need to change my expectations for when I go kayak fishing. I made a stake-out pole and installed a trolley system. Being able to anchor is going to help out a lot.

Hit up a local lake Friday afternoon. Temps from 53 to 56. Surprised by those temps but I am fishing a shallow lake. Figured it would be a very good day and that I would get a strong prespawn bite. Nope! Caught a chunky 16" in the first 15 minutes on a swimbait and proceeded to only catch 1 13"er on a chatterbait over the next 4 hours. Still great to be out on such a beautiful day. Starting to get a little more comfortable in my kayak.

Being off work and not being to take my boat where I'd like is definitely making me use my kayak more. And since I have learned of a place to go close to my house, it is easy sneak out for a couple hours. I have never really enjoyed shore fishing but this kayak fishing is relaxing.

Here's a picture I took a couple weeks ago. I have since added an anchor and a PVC holder in my box.

Hit up a new lake today. Temps 53-55. Stained water. Great to get out in the boat after more than a month.

Thought a chatterbait or a swimbait would be the ticket but no. Cycled through a rattle trap and a jerkbait but without any luck. Finesse jig did the damage even though the wind made it difficult to fish. Biggest bass was 17" with several others in the 14-15" range. Caught a stray walleye, pike, and good-sized crappie. Had a fish come unbuttoned right at the boat that looked like a catfish. Would have loved to of had a 5 species day.

You're right. Because of the current lake closures, I cannot fish my normal lakes so I am branching out with the kayak and this other new lake. It is definitely rewarding to pick apart new structure and catch fish. When I go to Braidwood or Lake Michigan, I usually fish the same half dozen or so areas. While I always scout a new area every time I go out, most of the time it doesn't pan out especially on Lake Michigan.

Yea no doubt. It's like in the annual "Goals" thread where everyone says they want to try to fish new spots instead of their usual rotations. Now, some are forced to do just that!

I'm working on my kayak fishing game as well. Can you stand-up on that one? I'm trying to find a good sit-on-top kayak where I can stand up too.

Other people do. I have watched videos on how stable it is but I don't feel comfortable standing. They make a standup bar that is intriguing to me but I'd like to try it out before dropping $100+ on one. https://www.austinkayak.com/Feelfree-St ... 9647P.html

It is interesting that you mention our goals thread since I revisit them quite often. I create a plan every time I go out which includes scouting and fishing at least one new spot. I feel that when I create a plan I accomplish more every time I go out. I anticipate lure changes and different areas I want to fish based on typical conditions. Obviously, you make adjustments due to the results of the day but I never want to be sitting in the boat after a couple hours not knowing what type of change to make or where to go. And I want to spend 20-30 minutes sidescanning each time out and especially on Lake Michigan I will drop the Aquaview down to get a look at the bottom. It hasn't resulted much on Lake Michigan other than a couple spots that just have to hold fish at certain times of the year but I have found a couple new productive spots on Braidwood. Great topic.

It is a great topic. I like to do a decent amount of exploring and trying new things when I fish. I think this can include not just new bodies of water but as Ted points out new areas on existing bodies of water, known bodies of water at new times of year, new target species etc. One of my successes this year was fishing a big body of water after ice out from my canoe that I had only previously ice fished.

This shelter-in-place is working for my fishing. Got out on Monday and Wednesday. Both days I caught 5-6 bass in the 14"-16" range. Nothing spectacular but action nonetheless. Both days I caught a walleye. I measured the one on Monday at 19" and the one today seemed a little bigger but I didn't measure it. I've been to this lake 3 times since Easter and caught a walleye all 3 times in the same area. Caught a couple small northern on Monday and what I think was a small muskie. Water temps 49-51 with stained water. The bass I catch are stacked. I'll catch 3-4 in the same spot and then go a while without catching another. I caught 4 today all in a corner that I kept coming back to even though I hadn't caught anything there. A big 2'-3' flat drops off to the main basin of the lake. I figured the bass were going to hang there before moving shallow. They were there today.

A variety of finesse and standard jigs and swimbaits and one on a chatterbait have done all the damage. Had a big fish smoke a swimbait but came unbuttoned when I tried to turn her. It made these 16" bass seem small. I suspect it was a 4-5-6 lb bass. It felt big.

By the way, the blood on the walleye is mine. Handling the fish in the net, I had a brainfart and went to lip it. I realized it too late.

Looking forward to getting out on Lake Michigan soon.

That is cool. Lately I have just been going to my subdivision pond and was suprised at the amount of decent crappie in there. At the very least it gives me a chance to get the kids outside and doing something besides video games.

Got out on the big pond Tuesday. Temps 47-49. Stained by Lake Michigan standards.

Caught a couple nice ones. 2 in the 18" range and another at 16" Lots of small coho. I probably caught 20.

I am embarrassed to say this but this is my first jerkbait smallie. Definitely the weakest link in my fishing arsenal.

Sounds like you had a good day.

Does your PFD auto inflate and is there a pocket or some way to attach tools? I’m thinking of getting one and have been doing some research.

Nice! Did the coho fight hard? I hear that spring coho fight really hard on bass type tackle vs. heavy trolling gear and are really fun.

They had a little spunk to them. They were all 2ish pounds. I think they were coho. Silver body with a greenish/gray back. If I put on an inline spinner I probably would of caught 50.

Gotta love getting to the lake and seeing a tournament launching. Oh well. Bite was slow but I did catch a few nice ones. What I found interesting is that none of the tournament guys went to spots I found over the last month and thought were good areas. I am eager to see how my day stacked up to theirs. Heard a few say how tough it was. I caught a chunky 17” and 3 in the 14-15” range. Caught a couple pike and a walleye. All the bass I caught was by crawling and working a chatterbait. The other fish came on a swim bait. Didn’t catch a single bass on a straight retrieve. Holy hell was the boat launch a nightmare. Seemed like half the fishermen were getting out for the first time and forgot how to launch.
