Gulp gone bad??

Postby Fishy Bitch » Feb Fri 21, 2020 11:58 am

I use Berkley Gulp the 1st 3-4 weeks after ice out and not again until late fall. I'm wondering if anyone knows how long is stays effective or if it can actually go bad and have a negative scent. All the opening, closing, fingers going in and out, sunlight etc... I'm sure it becomes less potent or if in fact it can become a turn off. Anyone know?

I've caught fish on lures that smell like a new shower curtain lol I'm sure they'll still catch fish.

How about an old shower curtain? What I'm asking is does this stuff go rancid over time like peanut butter, Crisco or other oily products?

Depends on what you're fishing for. The late, great Jimmy Piersall sprayed WD40 on dough balls to catch carp. Swore by it.
Keep calm and fish on...

There's a fine line between fishing and just sitting there looking stupid

I've had the same question as to if gulp looses its effectiveness over time when the packaged has been open for a while or even when it hasn't. I really don't think it goes rancid. My personal experience is that it remains pretty effective as long as it doesn't actually dry out. Now this is mainly experience fishing for bass, catfish, and crappie. Trout could be a different story and indeed the few times I've fished for stocked trout with trout dough, I always buy a fresh jar just to be safe.

Thanks for the input. It must be chemical based or highly preserved if it doesn't go bad.

Hey in some respects if it goes rancid it might do even better  But I do know I've left a Gulp fluke on a hook and regretted it. Ended up hard as a rock.

Take your open pack of gulp and combine it with another pack of gulp that still has the juice inside.
I put my chartreuse in with my minnow colored to keep them wet over the winter. I'll also put a
couple of mini mite plastics in there that have faded color wise. Hoping they'll still get bit. Dried
out gulp is trash in my opinion.

Never had Gulp go bad, honestly. The liquid in the little jars will turn a little yellow/orange, but doesn't seem to have an effect on the fish eating them.
