5/9/2017...shoulda been a good day.

Postby Woohoodude11 » May Thu 11, 2017 5:46 am

Late post.

Headed out to Opeka and was hoping for some success after quite a few down posts here. Before I could get the line wet, talked to a guy about the bite that seemed to be fishing for everything. Had a catfish rig in the water, had a bucket with 2 decent bluegill, and said bass weren't biting. hmm.
Started out on the North end, the only place I've ever had any success in years past. Bounced around a bit with nothing chasing, nothing biting. Ran into a couple guys I'm sure are here somewhere who stated the day before was incredibly productive, but both complained of tight lips that day (on and off overcast, 59 degrees, weather shouldn't have been an issue.).
Went back to the North end and felt so bad for one guy. Deck out in a full suit with a telescoping rod, within a half hour the dude lost 4 nice lures in the rocks.
Sounds like a very poor day all around. I'll be there sometime after noon today to try it again.

Opeka will eat your tackle if you let it, especially anything making bottom contact. Knowing this, I still drop shot there  I don't lose too many though as long as I use finesse drop shot weights. I don't have the guts to throw a jig there, at least not from shore. Never really have an issue losing any moving baits.

Was he throwing them on a spinning reel that he can't crank fast enough to keep them off the bottom? That's my assumption.

Yeah, Opeka exists to devour tackle... :x Hell, I was out yesterday and I had two snags. And I was fishing with minnows on a bobber!!

I always stick to the 'don't throw anything you necessarily want back' approach at Opeka. :(

PS: Things are starting to pop, caught over a dozen Mon and got my first senko fish off the season yesterday

It was indeed a spinning rod and he was using large bait.

I'm on my way there now, hopimh the sun dont hamper the bite.

Another goose egg! Super pressured today. Huge group of kids making more noise than casts from the pier all the way down the East side.

Kinda feeling like it is already. I noticed quite a few on beds at Axehead early last week, so I'd be surprised if at smaller Opeka that they aren't at least starting.
