First one

Postby joetrain » May Wed 24, 2017 12:31 pm

Had my maiden voyage on Lake O this morning. About 10 casts in I hooked and landed a nice bass @17 3/4 inches. Missed 2 others almost immediately ,after that the wind picked up. I tried to stick it out but 23 mph out of the NE was too much for me. I fished a total of 2 hours and left feeling really cold.

At least I caught the one. I'll be back because I shelled out the $$ for the launch pass so this lake is going to get hit hard by me this year.

Nice bass. Not a lot of places to hide from the wind out there. I'm sure I will be seeing you there at some point this year, I will have to come say hi.

I know that's exactly what I was thinking. I'm hoping to get the costs down to just pennies.

100 dollar bass lmao....

Clean fish joe. That's the thing about opeka, if it's windy, forget about it. Not so bad after heavy rains though, unlike the rivers.

Nice Joe. I've been debating getting the pass but I don't think I can commit to it

Do they stock that place annually? Do they put eyes or pike in there?

No eyes. They claim there's pike in there but I've never seen/heard of 1 being caught.

There is the Legend of the Opeka pike, but I think it's just a long-ago myth. Whenever there are pike with how aggressive they are you catch even small ones hitting big baits. Someone that has plied it's water for years would have caught one, seen one caught, or heard of one caught. I've never heard even a story of one.

The IDNR took it over managing the Lake from Des Plaines several years back when they did some shocking and came up with the new creel. There's yet to be a change/follow up so I don't know if it's been actively stocked or not. But there are a lot of fish out there even from the highly pressured shores.

Last pike I heard being caught was 6 or 7 years ago. Saw the pics from a regular at the lake. If you go back 7-8 years on the Opkea forum you'll find some pike pics as well. I remember seeing a nice low 30's one caught.
