Lake O 8/30/17

Postby joetrain » Aug Wed 30, 2017 10:54 am

Hit Lake Opeka this morning . Arrived at the gate at 6:20 and to my surprise it was already open. Got the yak down off the car, started loading it and realized I forgot my tackle. Idiot. Well I wasn't about to go back home so I fished with what was already tied on the 2 rods I brought.

I started using a jig/gulp combo hoping for a cat. Not even a sniff. I fished that whole side and nothing. Headed out to a deep water ledge and fished a drop shot with a root beer / gold Zman trout trick worm. What do ya know, I stumbled on to a school of bass. Boated 8 and lost 3 in the span of 40 minutes. Had a few swing and a miss too. The bass were all cookie cutter size 13-14 inches.

The bite died out , I started my way back to the launch just fishing sporadically. Nothing biting. I was back home by 9:30.

I drove 25 minutes to the Fox a couple of weeks ago, got 4 blocks from the river and realized I left my rods at home.

Nice...way to ad lib and make it work out!!

Speaking of forgetting things, one snowy winter I took my 3 boys up north for some snowmobiling and damn it hit me like a ton of bricks, when about 2 miles from the cabin i remembered that i forgot the keys to the sleds. Why i took them home in the first place I'll never know, oh were they mad, driving almost 300 miles. Boy...what a bone head move by me. Keys stayed up there after that.

Seems to be an agressive class of short bass. Im totally out of the loop at opeka this year and wish I had some 411 to share. The last couple years the place was a consistent late summer gem. Maybe the hungry ladies are holding off for now.
Nature and shit.

Becoming a drop shot fan by chance? You weren't using 1/4 pencil weight were you? Sounds like a very fun 40 minutes

The pedals rock. I can almost hold a position using a combination of pedal power and rudder. No lie I wish I would have bought this thing years ago.

Love the ledge slaying. I dunked my spinning reel 2 weeks ago and haven't been able to throw a drop shot but I just got it back from Coren's and you have me fired up.

I once got all the way to Opeka from East Lakeview and realized I didn't have any rods. Talked the clubhouse attendant into letting me borrow a 5 foot spincast from the boathouse, but unfortunately got skunked.

When you hit 50 you get this thing called CRS (Can't Remember Shit). When you hit 60 it becomes CRAFT. Work on it. :D
Keep calm and fish on...

There's a fine line between fishing and just sitting there looking stupid

Here’s a bonehead. Somewhere around Green Bay, after a couple hundred miles of travel we realized we left our “poles” back home. I was a kid of 12 or so traveling to the U.P. with my pop and my two adult brothers. We pulled off and found a department store (that’s what they were called back then) and with a $20 limit the old man told me to pick out a couple rods. I found one that was long and yellow and looked cool, had no idea it was a fly rod. I used it with a Garcia Mitchell 300 spinning reel. I still have that rod and use it on occasion, each time I do I can’t help but think about the old man and his 20 bucks. I guess sometimes a bonehead turns into a blessing
