Carp in Opeka?

Postby coachkwj » Mar Sat 31, 2018 12:17 pm

Has anyone caught or seen any large carp caught out of Opeka? Was talking to someone and they said they catch big ones there all the the time. Would love to wrestle with a few of those submarines and maybe some bonus cats like joetrain gets too.

The cat/carp presence is strong at Opeka. People seem to cast off the point down from the 'marina' for them with big baits/rods. Cats can easily go 7 lbs and even hit the occasional spinnerbait. There are some big grass carp there though I've never seen a real moster, just "tales".

I'm not sure where you can't find carp. Durable as cockroaches. I'd like to know where I can fish and not find them.

Haven't seen one yet but I've been bit off pretty convincingly. I'm out there a lot.

There is a carp, but the cats are very annoying!

Happy Easter to all.
Can you use the 3 rod Euro style set up or jus 2 rods. Read the regs and didn't say. Did say no release. Throw 'em on the bank or wait for a non-english person to take it?

Rule of thumb is if they don't post specific regs, refer to county regs.

As for banking it, its a park and there are plenty of trash cans if that's the route you're gonna go. Nobody, especially kids, want to see a shriveled dead or dying fish on the shore.

Interesting post. I used to catch carp at Opeka as a kid growing up in Des Plaines. My Dad, uncles, and I caught them up to 10 lbs. Bait of choice back then... Wheaties... No foolin'...

This was also back in the mid 1980's. Back when trout and the occasional Northern Pike were also common in the lake. Over the past 10 years, I have caught some really nice bass there. Only targeting them when I had my boat, of course...

Stand on the deck they built just east of the church side. On a sunny day you can see fleets of 40-50 grass carp all schooled up. Some of them are probably 3-1/2 feet long. Some monsters and plenty of ‘em.
