Opeka 6-16

Postby Brett » Jun Sun 17, 2018 9:21 am

5:30 to sundown, end of a scorching hot sunny day, minimal wind (didn't ever drop anchor), water was high from the previous night's rain. I mostly stayed shallow where rise in water level created a bigger % increase in depth and mostly threw gulp on 3/16 oz unpainted lead heads. I caught six fish, five on the stretch east of the hut on the golf course to about halfway back to the point. Three were decent sized and I photoed two (third was a quick release after ambulatory surgery).

Haven't spent much time out there yet but dropshot gulp will be on the menu. No gatos yet either.

Forgot to mention, weed growth is more than it's been the last two years. The clubhouse guy told me they herbicided the hell out of it a few years back. I remember there being more weeds when I first started fishing there. Ripping lipless through the tops was productive. Hope it gets back like that.

Yeah they went from unmanageable weeds to removing the weeds altogether, I was always skeptical of that approach as there seemed to be no weeds left at the time! Previously it was pretty out of control though, they were at a point scooping shore weeds out... Remember being greeted by this (August 2104)?

Haha I do. Had to make it tough to fish from shore. Last few years though it's been like fishing a skatepark. Helps you learn how they use structure when there is no cover. But I welcome the return of the jungle.

Got a dozen casts in and the bat signal went off, had to bail. There she is Joe. Just the right size make me think pig bass before I got a look. Once I saw it I had a blast letting it run around for a while.

Lake O-my-gosh! Nice report, and kudos to you, minstrel, for hitting the water on that hot day.
