First trip out for the season...first Coho of the year.

Postby ChiCityYaker » Mar Sun 13, 2016 9:21 pm

Well, winter break is over and I'm back with my first trip out for the 2016 season and I couldn't have asked for a better outing. I went out yesterday afternoon with my buddy Ben completely last minute to chase down some Coho and recon the downtown waters. Launched in Burnham Harbor by about 330p with almost no wind, glass like water on the main lake, and overcast skies. Remember when I said that this trip was last minute right? Ok, well in my rush to get to Burnham I realized just as I get into my Outback that I don't have my Bazooka tube rod holders or my Visicarbon Pro! lol :doh

Luckily there were no boats in the water...anywhere in sight really. That's the beauty of fishing the downtown waters pre-boating/beach season is that you can fish largely in peace. Anyway, since I wasn't fishing alone and planned to be back before sundown I made the judgement call that I would be ok without the Visicarbon. I wasn't going to let not having my rod holders stop me either! So I took one rod, put a crank on, and hand trolled for about 3 hours! :crazy :crazy :crazy Needless to say my right arm looks like Popeyes now! lol that was a lot of work BUT it would paid off.

The plan was to troll in the harbor and out into open water going SE and begin to loop back around once we were inline with 31st street harbor. At that point we trolled parallel to the breakwalls and shoreline walls, off about 50 yrds or so, back into Burnham. I started out with a bright red kwik fish that I modded with a fly treble tail but no takers. Switched to the pink lemonade flicker minnow with 25ft out flat line at 2.5mph and saw a mark on my fish finder going up and sure enough I got hit. Speaking of marks...didn't mark a lot of anything in our time out but when I did the fish were either hugging the bottom (lakers/browns likely) and or in the top half of the water 15<.

The picture makes the Coho look smaller than what it was which was about a 5lb-er but the rare chance to have the skyline in the background was worth it. I'll back back out again as much as possible before the boating season. See you on the water.

The bite is still going on the cranks but yeah I'll start running a flasher/spoon or fly soon. For sure by April.

Aux/Joe - thanks guys good to see u again on the forums. It's always nice when the water is calm like that, it really just feels special. I don't mind the normal wave action though it's not so bad once you get used to being out on the water in your yak. What was especially nice was no boats, anywhere! That is so rare in the downtown waters.

Awesome pics. I've been getting the itch and eyeing weather for consecutive days of light breezes. I kicked it around for last Saturday but I'd like to replace my wetsuit jacket before I take a chance water is probably upper 30s or low 40s I would think now

Water is 42 in the harbor and 40-41 in open water right now. If you see in the pic I was actually in the water not only to launch but to also test how it would feel if I fell in with my cold water clothing on. I actually have a video on that coming this week. But I can tell u that I was warm despite being in the water (up to my belly) with my layers and dry suit. However, once my hands touched the water while launching and landing fish, the air made them feel numb. That is where the immediate danger seems to be, exposed body parts in the cold water and air.

I started using Evernote, mainly for my kayak checklist and have stopped leaving home without things like  my paddle.

I type my varioius checklists on my PC and it syncs with my smartphone.

Great post. Congrats on the Coho. Calm days like that on the lake don't come around that often.

I should take my Hobie out on Lake Michigan, but I have a lot of safety measures to learn about first. I don't even know how much I don't know.

There's a free kayak fishing Lake Michigan seminar Sat 9-12 at Lake Michigan Angler that I'd highly recommend anyone interested in learning how to fish the lake attend. I'll be there.
