RIP Tom Petty. Another great American music icon passing away this year.

Hopefully he got his last dance with Mary Jane beforehand.

R.I.P. Aretha

I never really cared much for her, but they say she was really big. 18 Grammies and all. Most artists would kill to win one Grammy in their career. With a name only a urologist could love, she will be missed by many.

I've been asleep at the wheel. I missed these two, and sadly, two of my favorites.

One of my favorite songwriters:

R.I.P. Ric Ocasek

and one of my favorite female vocalists.

I posted about the death of Mark Hollis and I'm not even sure who he is either.

Marie Fredriksson was big and one half the pop duo Roxette. 60 million records, four #1 US hits and monstrous internationally.

R.I.P. Kenny Rogers

Five wives w/six #1 singles per wife. More girlfriends than grains of sand on spring break. He nearly ended his music career when he set up a 1-800 phone line for women to call him and talk dirty to him. Some would say he lived a chaotic life.

I saw Kenny Rogers a few years ago at Silver Creek in SW Michigan. It was a good show but some fool was heckling him. Who would heckle Kenny Rogers? I wasn't aware of his personal life but he was talented and a good performer till the end.
Ron, you made mention of Peter Tork but not Davey Jones. Mickey Dolenz was my favorite, don't wanna see him on here any time soon.

Oh, that's because he passed 4 years before this thread was started. I love my Monkeys. When I was just a little tork, I thought they blew the Beatles away. They could have used my dad as a double for Dolenz and most folks wouldn't have even noticed.

I think Kenny played Pheasant Run in St. Charles a bunch through the years. Bad, bad old joke: Q-What did Kenny Roger's tour bus driver say just before he crashed the bus? A-"You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel!"

Don't know shit about Joe D but John Prine? If we lose him it will be a dark, dark day.

He was a mail carrier back in the day (me too) and wrote some of his songs sitting in USPS relay boxes in the rain. Legendary. Paint me an angel that flies from Montgomery...

R.I.P. Alan Merrill

Another Corona

alan.gif

American rock musician Alan Merrill, best known for co-writing and recording the original version of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," died March 29 of complications from the coronavirus. He was 69.

(In 1983, the band I was in covered that tune that was then current and now classic. - R.G.)

I got scared when I saw the photo. I thought Sara Gilbert from Roseanne had died.

While most guys drool over Stacy's mom (Rachel Hunter), you'll find me drooling over the Roland Juno-6 synthesizer featured in the video. I just built this replacement Juno-60 body for a semi-famous EDM artist out of solid walnut to replace the original pressboard fake wood original body.

Not a musician or singer/front-man, but I didn't want to start a thread. Still radio-related. Sox radio broadcaster Ed Farmer passed away yesterday. No report on COD, but I imagine it could be Covid-19 related. He was 70.

People are so dumb.

"His death comes as the public has drawn inspiration from his music during the coronavirus pandemic, with health care workers, choirs, artists and more posting their own renditions on “Lean on Me” to help get through the difficult times."

A bunch of people leaning on each other would be an egregious violation of the social distancing policy. Think with your heads and not your emotions!!

(belated)R.I.P. Neal Peart

How did I miss posting this one from January? Rush is my 2nd or 3rd favorite band, probably tied for 2nd with Styx. Too distraught at the time, I guess.

Neil-Peart.jpg

Back in high school, I was hanging out with a friend, sitting on his bed and air drumming to Neal Peart. (he is no doubt the most air-drummed drummer in history). One of my air drumming drum sticks was a felt tip pen. Unknown to me, the the cap flew off. When the intense Rush song was done and I came out of my trance, I looked up and then saw that I had covered the wall, ceiling and bed comforter with ink. Man, was I in trouble with that one.

Speaking of MTV unplugged and great voices, Lane Staley also in April about 18yrs ago.

Brian replaced Paul Rodgers in Bad Company in the mid-80s into the early 90s.

They had a couple big hits with him:

One of the coolest shows I've was about 2 weeks after Queen + Paul Rodgers ended their several year mega world tour in the monster arenas. Paul played a festival in Wood Dale that was general admission and we got to go right up to the stage for the show. A great performance. Howard Leese from Heart was on guitar.
