How to (or not to) make a hole in ice with red-hot metal

Postby Darkstar72 » Jan Wed 25, 2017 1:35 pm

I like the red-hot nickle ball videos on YouTube. They make me chuckle.

Here's one who's timing is good since we're in (a lull in) ice season.

Place your bets! Will the coffee-can sized steel cylinder go through?

Great vid! While out on the FP lake a couple of weeks ago, I was day dreaming (fishing was slow) of making holes in some manner like that with heat. Something other than augering. I also thought of lasers preferably with some kind of self-contained nuclear power source that was light to lug around. I'm not kidding, I actually was thinking of this stuff. But, alas, those devices and power sources are not cheap or easily attained.

I was disappointed to see how long it took to make that hole. Kind of looks not promising or practical. Plus there is long ramp time to get your metal red hot. The collateral damage to the ice surrounding the hole was bad too. Still a really cool experiment. Glad they did it and now I can put that idea to rest for now.

Maybe a flame thrower from the army/navy surplus store wouldn't cost too much?

The video channel has an update! They get their tool and iron cylinder back.

Quite the crazy Finnish couple but at the end of the video they reveal that they are pretty smart....they are selling "Warm, warm, cold as Fuck" tshirts!
