2/9 Still too cold for swimming...

Postby RonG » Feb Thu 09, 2017 2:23 pm

...so I went ice fishing this morning instead. I went scouting to see what was left after the last warmup and rains. My ponds are as good as gone. Even my ice holes are gone on Roach Motel pond, replaced by open water.

No one was fishing the FP lake, so I did so because I hate crowds. Safe ice abounded except one open water shore. The ice cracking and cracks appearing under foot from my weight kept stopping me in my tracks over and over. You get used to it after awhile. The soup du jour today was chill gills and perch.

The rest of the ice season does not look well for most our bodies of water.

Yeah good one Ron. One time I started my snowsuit on fire when it was to close to my lantern.

Nice fish. Years ago when I was taking water chemistry samples on a closed FP lake (getting it ready for the public-it had been bought from a gun club) the noise of the ice cracking (and then the cracks forming) while I was waling on the ice (and the only one in the whole FP) was VERY unnerving. But as you said, you eventually get used to it.

Keep calm and fish on...

There's a fine line between fishing and just sitting there looking stupid

I've got a big patch on those snowpants pictured because of my lantern. Well, actually because of me. Patches on my coat sleeves too from lantern burns. (when I said "Leg Warmer", that was the blue gill wrapping around my leg. The lantern is farther away than it looks)

I love loud ice, the louder the better when the lake is just doing it's thing. It's music to my ears. Cracking from my weight is freaky. Even freakier today in the bright sun watching those glistening/sparkle-ing cracks appear and zoom across like lightning bolts.

4"on the north end. 5" on the south side. Overall, the fishing was a bit slow, but hey, I got some ice fishing in. With today's temps and tonight's cold, the ice should be the same or a little thicker by tomorrow. I may squeeze one last trip in.
