Played hooky a couple of days over the last two weeks and walked some ice in/around Antioch. Didn't get much in the way of panfish, but I did sack at least a baker's dozen of nice eater-sized walters in 2 days. State regs are 14" to 18", protected slot 18" to 24", and only 1 over 24" allowed, so many of those fish went back into the hole they came out of.
Pattern was easy once we found 'em. 12' to 16' drops from (old) weed flats with some kind of rock or mixed composition bottom. I'd drill holes on drops in that depth range, see the variance of bottom signal on the flasher from hole-to-hole and sometimes the fish would be there. Most of my fish came on a 1/8th oz. Tingler spoon tipped with 1/2 a fathead minnow. Head and tail sections worked equally well.
Last week the ice on Marie was 5" to 2" with lots of open water in current areas and even less than 2" in the main lake saddle that I decided to NOT
walk on. I can imagine that with the recent warm-up the ice has gotten soft, but I'm sure there is still some good ice up there to fish and will be through the rest of the forecasted 10 days.https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/u ... .48,-88.10
Also, the cheeseburger and fries at the Sandbar is bomb as hell after a long day walking around on the ice.
