hopped out of bed early on saturday with great hope in seeing some largemouth go topside. partner and i watched 6 tip ups intently until our eyes bled. no flags were raised in the first 2 hours so it was time to warm the blood up a bit and hole hop for pannies. action started immediately in about 5 fow. #3 tungsten gold jig with just bits of a wax worm was the ticket. a full wax worm only prompted nibbles and marks that disappeared slowly. with the panfish action came a couple flags as well with just average largemouth willing to show face. of course, the big one came unbuttoned before i could hoist her up. it hurts more when you can see their size, followed by their lethargic retreat toward deeper water.
whoever said ice fishing was not an extreme sport has never put 400 lbs of man in a small shanty on 3 inches of ice with the heater blasting.
