Shabbona 02/09/20 - Best Ice Outing of This Short Season

Feb Mon 10, 2020 9:23 am

Got out on Shabbona with a buddy and my 12 year old daughter yesterday. Fished from 7:30-3:00pm. Ice was 6-7 inches everywhere other than one open water area kinda by the launch. Slow to start the day, with only a couple fish in the deep trees the first hour, then basically what amounts to a blizzard hit us. During the snowstorm we moved because our bite died, drilled a ton of holes, and we finally found em around some trees in 25 fow. Bite got real aggressive the last 2 hours from 1-3, once the wind laid down some, and the snow stopped falling. Very light jigging action imparted by just the spring bobber about 4 feet off bottom would call em up on the flasher, then a heavy pause for 5-10 seconds would force them to nose up to it. Then a little twitch while lifting the jig away from them, and they'd hammer it. Ended up with around a dozen keepers between the 3 of us, with a couple keepers lost at the hole, and a few small fish sent back down the hole. Was a good day. Would have hung out another hour or two, but the propane in the heater went dry, so the little one got cold. That had to happen during the hot bite, of course. Deadsticking rods while we packed up was still producing fish. With more propane we probably would have had some more on death row. Lesson learned. When you think you have enough propane, always bring more. Still our best day on the minimal ice we've had so far this winter. Only been out 3-4 times. Hot combo was a purple tungsten jig with black spots, and a pink wedgie. We may be back out on Shabb this coming weekend.

We tried to hide the little one in this pic, lol. It came in 35 FOW and its eyes were bulging out, so I didn't feel right sending it back down the hole.

Thanks!

The nice thing is it's supposed to get really cold for a few nights later this week. Teens by Wednesday night, and I think Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night highs are in single digits. So the local ponds and lakes should lock back up again.

Thanks all.

She's been dying to get on the ice this year. Such a late start to ice season... and then last time we wanted to get out she ended up with flu the night before. Just bad luck/timing for her. Was her first outing of the year, and only my 4th. This time last year we had been out together 8-10 times.
