Christmas Eve hammer handle

From the south suburbs to the northwest suburbs, the Des Plaines River provides some excellent fishing opportunities.

Christmas Eve hammer handle

Postby Rambler » Dec Tue 24, 2019 3:56 pm

Just got back from spending a few hours on the river. Beautiful afternoon. Caught a hammer handle just below the Chicago Ave. bridge on a swim jig with a twister tail. Put up a nice fight for a dink.

Walked down river casting to likely spots. Had a hit from a monster - back wider than my fist - just below the island. Got off almost immediately. Probably my last fish & last miss of 2019.

Happy holidays to all!

Blasphemy. Not the last fish of December carry some 5 to 6inch swimbaits and stickbaits

I always did better on the upstream side of that bridge. Well done.

I agree Ski. Nice weather or at least fishable weather through next week.

At least you got out and didn’t skunk Rambler. Have a great Christmas

Hopefully we will have open water on the Preserve waters soon. 10 day looking OK but temps dropping again in the New Year. Tight lines all.

Ski - you were right. I went back to the river today. Put a Keitech on a green & orange jig. Caught a 32" pike. Sorry - no pics - by the time I landed it it was completely tuckered out & I wanted to get it off the hook & back in the water ASAP. Took the time to measure it though.

That was the biggest pike I've caught on that stretch maybe ever. If it is indeed the last fish of 2019 I'll take it.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Kwanza, Festivus or whatever is your choice!

Cool and nice with the follow up pike!
To fish or not to fish......that's a stupid question.

Very nice! Awesome for this time of year.

Are you sure it wasn't the other way around?
