The steelhead run is on

Postby jmdog2003 » Mar Sun 25, 2018 11:25 am

Checked out the St. Dupe River the past two Sundays to see how the spring steelhead run was doing. The holdovers from last autumn's flooding have packed on some weight. Such a pity that this is a one year fluke. These fish are awfully aggressive and good fighters.

The native fish have been much slower to turn on with the chilly temps. Can always count on the rock bass though. The average size seems to be up a bit. This guy stopped my lure dead in its tracks.

Will be branching out soon with rising water temps. That'll add more bass to the scorecard as the trout seem to have hijacked these wintering holes.

Normally I'm out every weekend as soon as morning temps are consistently in the upper 20's. Haven't been as motivated this season and probably wouldn't have rolled out of bed this morning had I known about the steady 10-15 mph winds out of the northeast. Guides were icing up until I got out of the water.

Gorgeous colors on the rainbow. They were silvers last fall if I remember correctly. If it stays cool like it has been, like the extended forecasts are saying it’s going to, then you should get another couple months of fishing for them

I can see all the fly fishing costumes lining up the banks already. And shame on you for not doing the salmon pose with hand on the rear fin, or the fish pic in some homemade wicker net.

Stellar rockies again too.

This continues to be one of the strangest things I've seen out of the duper. I kind of like that they survived and put on weight but we all know the end story come summer. Good for you for getting in on the action.

If they can find themselves some shitplant outflow there is a good chance they can survive the summer months. I think those outflows are usually pushed out around 50°F - 55°F.

Thanks for the report JM, but I was out Sunday on the same river and found the smallies to be rather active hitting swimjigs with a decent retrieve with the current. Just had to find the deeper water and work the pools.

I wouldn't mind tying into one or two of those holdover bows on my 4wt.

Great catches as usual for the Dog.

I had precisely zero luck on the Duper yesterday late afternoon, not even a bite at my go-to spots, I would have killed for that rockie, not to mention a rainbow! I was throwing Gulp minnows and swim shads. Eventually got a bit cold standing around in that water, even though the winds had died down by evening.

Awesome. Get a shovel and do some night time digging channel that pond to the river permanently.

Haha "The St. Dupe". Nice work as always. I'll be down near Channahon on Saturday and I think I'll have time to wet a line on the ole' St. Dupe.

Probably the last trout run but who knows? Woke up to two inches of freakin' snow this morning. I can feel my patience for cold water bass fishing eroding because the trout have been so constant. Hopefully it doesn't hurt me next winter. These trout have really packed on some size. Last fall, they were large cigars. Now I'm contacting round bodied 15"+ 'bows. Got a half dozen more trout and had to deal with the nuisance of a green sunfish and dink smallmouth.

Spotted a very lethargic largemouth and bullfrog. Waded right up and poked 'em with my rod tip.

Won't be long now for you hard water fans. Get the tip ups out.

Yeah, I'm so over this weather. You can still fish in it but it sucks. I'm like you in that I enjoy the cold water period but at this point on the calendar, I'd rather not. Has to be the most extended spring cold water period I can remember. Bring on Pre-spawn fishing and 50+ degree water temps, please

Hilarious that you were able to poke that bass and bull frog, lol. It is that freaking cold. I hope those Trout keep biting for you, you gotta have at least another month. As always, good catchin'
