The fish are becoming active. Higher flows and warmer-than-the-river rainfall will typically trigger the spring bite in earnest. There were worms on my driveway this morning, a sure sign of feeding smallmouth. No real trick when they're hungry. Just the tried and true 4" white grub on a 1/2 oz jig. Had mostly runts but these three fish must have been sitting right on top of each other; they all came out of the same spot on three consecutive casts.

I used to catch beastly rock bass on the west branch. Average size has been down for five years or so now. But they're every bit as eager as the smallies.

I'm thinking tomorrow may be a banner day. It all really depends on how much rain we get. The rivers may be tough to approach if they flood. I'm also sporting my pandemic beard of three weeks. We're not allowed back in the office until May 1 at the earliest. I may not shave until then, I haven't decided yet. Also probably gonna buzz my noggin. Can't wait that long for a real haircut.
