Things picked up today

There are seemingly endless amounts of rivers, creeks and their tributaries throughout northeast Illinois.

Things picked up today

Postby catchafew » May Thu 10, 2018 11:04 pm

I fished one of my better rivers again today for smallies and they were in a good mood and I landed about 25 in about 3 hours from 14:30 to 15:30 and then from 17:30 to 19:30. Cooler day with temps in the upper 50s and dropping quickly into the 30s tonight. Bigger fish are moving in and taking prime real estate at the top of the pool and lesser smallies are branching out further into the current but the strike zone id getting bigger and is stretching out quite a bit down stream. Best bets are still to cast close to the walls, rocks and pockets. Skeeters are still quiet. First smallies of the season going a little over 20" tonight.

All on 4" tubes with 1/8oz jigs both in pumpkin seed and root beer colors. Time to breakout fun stuff with spinner baits, square bills and top waters over the next few days to break the monotony or hit new and different rivers. In a weird sense my buddies and I might work over these fish again tomorrow on this stretch so the bucket heads have a tough go of it over the weekend as the smallies are nursing fat lips. I'll keep a tons of gills, crappie, perch or eyes over the ice season but I get all butthurt when folks keep bass or smallies, go figure.

Some of the better cookie cutters and yes I was prepared tonight.

Just stop. Just don't. I don't think any of us can take anymore...I just had a mild stroke from jealousy, haha. Is it me or is anyone else amused you didn't even mention the Musky?, lol "Ehh, I'll just throw this photo up of this mere 42" Musky" You're killin' us. That first smallie the 3rd and the 4th are absolute tanks man...that had to be a total Battle Royal in fast(er) moving water. Catch are you using Casting or Spinning gear? Kinda appears to be casting but not 100%. Just beautiful man

Ok, so I just came up with this. You pick your favorite sporting organization or charity, whatever, your choice. We WCF members and make it members who've contributed, say, a minimum of 25 posts in the last year and we buy raffle tickets, with the proceeds going to your charity. You pick 3 or 4 me, I came up with it after all and the winners get a guided trip with you in the season of your choice. What do you think? and yes, I'm chuckling as I write this but you can bet your butt hurt ass, we'd buy tickets, haha.

Wow. Great post.

I guess there are bucket heads everywhere. It’s funny how different areas of the country have different attitudes about keeping fish. When I’m in Florida the thought there is that bass are no different than bluegill as far as keeping goes. I myself prefer to release my caught bass but I’m not opposed to anyone keeping a legally caught fish. I do think that obvious trophy fish should be realessed because of their superiority.

Nice Job Mike. That's one heck of a fine day ......

Yep, those are some fat smallies and my favorite is that last pic.

After some good fishing in a place like that you just take some time, sit on a rock and take in the view. Love it

Great fish for sure. I think I'm even more impressed by the scenery! Must be amazing to have that so close to home.

And I like your "sore mouth 'em for their own good" plan..

Also hate to see fish like harvested.
