There are seemingly endless amounts of rivers, creeks and their tributaries throughout northeast Illinois.

5/19 - While doing a 'room clearing' exercise I noticed...

...smallies will hit a larger bait like it's a just a typical meal, I've noticed this before over the years. In these two photos I have a 6" Jake (musky lure) tied on that's been doing a lot of musky work lately. I've also seen smallies spit out 7" half-digested fish when I removed a 4" tube. They can be real piggies at times.

By 'Room Clearing' I like to fish musky lures and equipment first before I settle down to fish smallies if a patch of river is loaded with decent size skis/pike. Nothing is more frustrating than to tag into a musky with bass gear and often have a sad ending with wimpy hooksets, weaker hooks, sometimes no leader, etc... My thoughts are beat up the musky first, then they're are usually in a sullen mood and next I'll fish more appropriate smallie lures and equipment. This technique doesn't always work and sometimes I'll have a stupid ski take a 4" tube after I threw two dozen casts in front of him with smaller musky lures.

Anyways four today in the first 5 minutes, two on jakes and two on tubes. Skunked the next 25 minutes and packed it up. Rainy and 41 degrees today, river is the highest I've ever seen it while fishing. Hope the rain stops and we get some needed heat. The bite today and on the previous 'smallie' outing was achieved success by working the tube really slow and they'd take it 'on the fall'. I switched to a darker tube (from pumpkin to watermelon) hoping the conventional wisdom of 'darker lures on dark days' might continue the bite but nothing.

I have a special guest and noted angler coming up this week so I'm not going to ride the smallies too hard on this stretch. Hopefully the smallies show him some northwoods hospitality. One thing I truly miss about fishing in Chicago and with other WCFers is that sometimes another person brings a different perspective to your waters that can actually be more productive.

Green with envy. Looks like you're livin' the dream.
Keep calm and fish on...

Aux,

It's likely not a surprise to you but that roaring current is basically useless for fishing, at least has been my experience. Even the pockets on the back walls I've talked about on previous posts were washed out with crazy current. In conditions like this I fish anything from the bank but not into a monster current. Water clarity doesn't really change up here despite water levels which is a benefit.

This reply is mostly for others to note.

I got skunked on Wednesday night at this spot and missed two bites. Might be a tough one this weekend.

This boulder I've stood on for years is now an island all the boulders in the river are now about 1 foot under water, never seen it this high.

Catch you're definitely right about that. I find they're adjacent to that white water a lot of times though. In my experience I cover a lot of flat boring stretches with consistently boring/slower current, but when I find a little white water I can run into a few fish.
