I made a thing! *UPDATED*

Postby polishfly » Aug Thu 23, 2018 11:49 pm

Hello friends (and foes)! Been gone a while, but due to good reason, fun insanity inducing reason. I was building! Took 4.5 months of nights and weekends that work wasnt stealing from me, but its done and I think its kinda bad ass. I call it...Tanto! I learned a lot, it was kind of like Polish bootcamp...everything from trailer frame construction, to nightmares with paint, undersealing, floor leveling, flooring, wood finish, discrete no-screw no-wire showing building, aluminum work...lots of caulk...white caulk, black caulk, even Asian caulk I think...all types of caulk. Too much caulk...trim work, and a hell of a lot of wiring, amps, shmaps, and fuses...About the only thing I didnt learn here was plumbing! But that I learned redoing my bathroom just before taking on this project. So long story short, this is my version of a "teardrop" trailer/camper/whathaveyou. To me it is a hardshell tent with junk in the trunk. Simplifies my camping which is my means of lodging for the outdoor adventures (hiking, biking, fishing, etc) that I partake in. Done are the days of my ass showing up at 11pm on a Friday night and having to scramble with my tent in the dark or having to pack up all wet/muddy gear on a Sunday morning after a good rain storm. This is the first of hopefully many rigs and outfittings for outdoor adventures. I plan on making this a company since this kinda went 1000x smoother than I thought 4.5 months ago staring at a few boxes in my garage that were then the parts that make up the trailer frame. I hope you like it! I know there are many out there like it from many different builders and I did get my inspiration from a certain trailer manufacturer as well as the godfather of Teardrops himself Mr. Frank Bear, but I used some unique techniques that I came up with when I encountered certain issues like insulation, my no seam bent front wall, and my hidden hardware and wire design. Anyway...I hope to see you guys out on the water soon now that I am closing the shop for a few months while I rest and catch up on life...

Great work! Ive always planned on making a teardrop.. What do you have powering it? Any panels on top? How much did materials run you in the end? Very cool, congrats!

Killer thing! When you taking orders? I’d like triple powered slide-outs, expandable roof, definitely A/C, built in fridge and toaster oven. Oh, the GF will need a bathroom with a tub :D kidding aside you should feel very proud of finishing that project

Thank you all for the kind words!

Phil - I have a Renogy 100AH AMG battery and I will be getting an 80W panel that will be movable as the sun does its thing. It will be stored in the tongue box that has yet to arrive...materials were quite a bit but around 60% of what I was quoted for a similar build that had much less customization and OCD touch haha.

Lip Yanker...whats a type 181? New to trailers haha...speaking of which....I cant reverse for shit.

Hedonfrog stay tuned and keep thinking about what you would want ;)

Badger its 6.5'×5' inside give or take a half inch. The rear galley is 16"×5" with a 48x40" door. Plenty of room for literally everything in all of my camping totes plus the coolers, bedding, blankets. A shelf for clothes and another cubby/shelf for charging needs near that "head unit". Once I have the tongue box I will have my camp table, 2 camp chairs and solar in it plus maybe some tools or whatever else will fit. I'm looking for the ideal water tank for the galley next to the coolers on the right but its a tight space so may mount a bigger one underneath. My idea is to just hook up n go more or less. Back of pickup will be for activity gear such as bikes or kayaks. I bought cross bars that keep the yaks above the bed a few inches so I can close my tail gate. It also makes shuttling 3 yaks very easy when not towing anything.

I will post more pics when it all gets rigged out.

PF- Sorry for any confusion. My reference was to the VW Type 181, aka "Thing".

Your trailer looks great. Just a little practice backing up and you'll be good in no time.

Got out for some weekend trips, up to the northwoods, and the dunes of Michigan. Survived both with only a few stories to tell. Here are some pics of the beast in use!

I also made a website =) http://www.tantotrailers.com feel free to check it out although it is mostly under construction!

Rambler, it is stupid light...I can move it up and down my driveway into my garage (uphill) by hand....I would guess around 1000lbs maybe less...maybe I'm just strong?

Paul, Your trailer is extremely well built and thought out. It was very cool to see it in person and all the detail that went into it.

But you forgot the best part of the northwoods trip...The fish!

The answer is 'yes'. I'm planning a Northwoods trip next month but will probably drive to town for breakfast & dinner. It's still camping because I'll sleep in a tent on a foam pad in a sleeping bag.

This is what happens when you get old & lazy.

Oh and PF, that is amazingly light. You could tow it with almost anything.

Such a cool camper and the satisfaction that you built it by hand, by yourself, has got to be very rewarding. Some great fish catches to boot. I'm with Urb, gotta have potato's n onions...you can leave the green peppers at home

Good work on the water guys. Once it was put to use, did you find anything you would change on the trailer?

3rd successful trip (WI, MI, IN), I have covered much of the midwest already and heading up to the UP this weekend for a mountain bike race. Hope my stickers get here in time =D

Phil, I can honestly say that I would not change a damn thing as of right now! I am still waiting on the tongue box, and I am considering extending my tongue to be able to fit my 11.5' kayak on my truck bed cross bars (currently the tongue is too short and the yak hits the camper before its hitched, no bueno). That part I did not build myself, it was part of the trailer frame that I purchased, so not technically my own fault/mistake. I will be adding a roof rack with cross bars which will have a Batwing Awning attached to it. Debating whether to trailer top the damn yak and say screw it on extending the tongue....but one of the reasons I got my pickup was to not car/trailer top anything so that is TBD.

Some more pics
