Venturing into the great outdoors throughout Chicagoland. More that just fishing - hiking, biking, nature trails, nature centers, geocaching, sights to see, etc., etc.

Boss let me work from home today. (Thanks)
Just had a late lunch and was able to see a Red-bellied Woodpecker come for a snack on my apple tree then finally up close to me suet feeder.
Sorry no picture taken but this is from Cornell University bird web site.
I may be wrong on the ID. It looked like a Flicker but had way more red on the head like this guy does. Temp at the time -14 degF.

Your ID is correct. We have a Downy that lives in a hole it pecked in the cherry tree outside our den. Our granddaughter gets a real kick out of watching it go in & out.

We had two older crabapple trees that had lots of old wood for them to sort through. We get those little guys and a similar in color, but larger pecker. Not sure what kind it is but its double the size of the little ones, and we see them far less often. We have a pear tree they seem to enjoy drilling into now.
I don't think my neighbors like them very much... or at least their wooden siding doesn't..

Hmm...how could you tell they had a larger pecker?
Phil - not sure which post you're referring to. If it's mine re Downy woodpeckers, then what you had was Downys and Hairys. They look almost identical except that Hairys are a lot bigger.

Yep. Have one that visits the feeders now and again.
