Dave - age certainly plays a role. Being at a different place in life (age, relative wealth, etc) comes into play. Back in the day I could travel in comfort on almost no $$. 'Comfort' equaled a good tent, decent sleeping bag, sleeping pad, etc. One year I traveled for around 7 months on $400 and that included gas.
These days while I still love camping I find that when I travel (especially with my wife) I prefer good B&Bs, nice restaurants, etc. Still love hiking, camping, fishing but it's just different.

Yeah - never was big on beaches (got my fill life guarding for the Chicago Park District) or cruises. We went on one to the Bahamas years ago. We both hated it. But my rambles back in the day weren't really a vacation. More like 2 - 3 years of bumming once the government told me they wouldn't need my services and I got done with school. I figured I had plenty of time to get serious and managed to put it off until after turning 30.

There's a fine line between fishing and just sitting there looking stupid
