Rock Creek 2018

Postby mack » Mar Thu 29, 2018 8:45 am

Arriving at 7:00 am to an empty lot and a full bladder, I paid homage to the fishing gods for mid-week day trips. The morning was cool and crisp and just perfect for a day of wading the creek. While donning my fly fisher costume I decided to go with hippies rather than the chest waders, they’re much more suitable for later homage’s. Grabbing my 2wt. glass rod and a box of bugs I hit the trail. The water was a little stained and the sky overcast so I went with a black micro bugger hitting the slower water near shore and letting it drift through the pocket. No interest in the black bug, so working my way down creek and switching fly’s I tried PTN, and other small bugs all dark in color. After many flies and no fish I decided to go rouge and flip a #10 sparse white and tan clouser with gold bead chain eyes….Bingo
The bows were loving it, especially stripping in after the swing. I ended the day with my biggest rainbow fat and long, longer than my homemade wicker net…just kidding, my net was bought at Cabela’s bargain cave.

Thanks for the great report, Mack.

I agree - nothing like mid-week day trips. Solitude.

Nice report. They like the shine a lot. Small gold beads on everything that caught me fish at apple river.

Been away for awhile...

But for buggers try the Czech style jig buggers if you haven’t already. Get down quicker and hang up less.

Speaking of...most of the Czech/tactical nymphs are amazing as droppers or on their own for the trout there.

IL DNR are morons.

The Kankakee is at 6000 cfs and dropping. I’ve waded the creek when the river was at 14000 with little issues.

Any word about if they are actually stocking it? Other sites say it’s delayed but no note about that for Rock Creek.

Heard from a local it will be in November. KKK is muddy as of yesterday. Saw no one fishing.

I believe they will stock, but the early season is cancelled. Catch and keep opens on the 19th
