Almost...

Hit a dam on my way back into town for the work week this afternoon. Expected to take a couple casts, lose 3 or 4 jigs in the rocks, maybe get a bite or 2 and leave. And, thats pretty much what happened. But, the 2 bites made it worthwhile:

Almost a new PB walleye. Meaured 27"+a little change. It ate a 4"Lunker city fin S fish on a 1/4 head being popped along the bottom. Thunked it hard & when I set the hook & the rod didnt move, I assumed I had stuck a muskie that hadnt realized it was hooked yet. After a few dashes & dives for the bottom, the leader came up I was delighted to see the eyes & tail-tips of the biggest eye Ive caught in a while. Only bigger walleye Ive ever caught was in the same spot almost exactly 2 yrs ago( just over 28").

The other bite was a pretty 18"-19"ish walleye that I pitched back without a photo.

That’s worth losing a few jigs.

Thanks folks!

Woke up early & decided to try pounding some walleyes before pounding nails. I love it when a plan works out! Nothing big this a.m., but dinner is secured!

Sometimes its funny how things work out!

Fishing has been less than stellar as of late, for me. Catching a few walleyes here/there, but action is a bit lighter than the previous weeks. Decided it was time to start targeting smallies, but that has been a lackluster pursuit, too. A decent 1 here/there, but nothing exceptional.
With as crappy as walleye fishing has been the last couple days, decided to hit a dam that usually coughs up a few big smallies if you persist. Started swimming hair, nada. Swimming a grub? nope. Twitching jerkbaits, oh no. After breaking off another hair jig, I grabbed my rod rigged with a 4" fluke/jighead. About 5 minutes later, set the hook on a tick that turned out to be a slot walleye @ 20&1/4" . Landed a nice 16" 3 casts later. And, those were the only 2 bites I got!

Retreated from the heat for awhile & figured on hitting it again after the sun went down. So, after sunset I headed to the dam thats been coughing up most of my decent walleye. Started gliding a black bucktail along the rocky bottom, which is usually a pretty reliable program for me. Soon after, felt the jig get hammered & landed a nice 15" smallmouth. Next cast, I caught its twin brother. Wound up catching a dozen or so nice smallies, nothing monsterous, but did get 1 that was 19"ish.

A slow, steady do-nothing retrieve seemed to be the only way they'd have it, tonight.
Never did catch a walleye tonight, either!

Hair jigs at night in June. I can't imagine the walleye or smallmouth see that too much. Kind of reminds me of my night walleye pursuits this summer on Lake Geneva. 10 smallies to every 1 walleye and had a streak of something like 27 in a row over 18 inches. Truly believe some of those big smallies are on nights only feeding pattern.

I firmly believe the bass here in NC are at times on a night feed. I’m hesitant to launch my Hobie at night by myself. Some day maybe.

Hit it late a.m. in an attempt to beat the heat. Not many fish, but a couple decent 1's.

Nice 18"ish eye that gulped my 1/8oz black bucktail jig intended for a big smallie. Oh well, no problem!
And caught 2 decent smallies & a few little wannnabe smallmouth

Nice to catch them on your own work. I bought a cheap vice and some other tools, friend from Michigan set me up with some bucktail so I have given it a go. The past two outings I have caught fish on my jigs. Fish must be really stupid if they are hitting my stuff.
