Last minute decision to make the 3 hr+ drive up for the walleye run. I fished it once with my cousin in 2016 and in 2 days we ended up with 4 small walleye. Different story this time as I decided just to fish and not try to duplicate what everyone else does. I started shallow in the morning using rattlebaits and in the first hour or so stuck a couple big females. My hands were froze so I idled around a bit looking at all the boats jigging while I warmed up. I had only seen one other fish caught but I happened to go over an area and marked a bunch of fish on the bottom. I dropped down, started to lift the jig and already had a fish on. I beat up on that school for a few minutes before they shut down. From there I bounced around and picked off one here and there. In the evening I tied on the rattlebait and picked up two more. Total of 14 fish for the day and most between 22-25 inches. Definitely the best day size wise I have ever had. I have never seen an area with so many fishermen and so heavily pressured. Hundreds of boats out during the day, and it was starting to get busier when I left with the night guys getting on the water. Shore fishermen everywhere too. Still no 30 inchers, but there is always next year.
