Depere 04/05

Last minute decision to make the 3 hr+ drive up for the walleye run. I fished it once with my cousin in 2016 and in 2 days we ended up with 4 small walleye. Different story this time as I decided just to fish and not try to duplicate what everyone else does. I started shallow in the morning using rattlebaits and in the first hour or so stuck a couple big females. My hands were froze so I idled around a bit looking at all the boats jigging while I warmed up. I had only seen one other fish caught but I happened to go over an area and marked a bunch of fish on the bottom. I dropped down, started to lift the jig and already had a fish on. I beat up on that school for a few minutes before they shut down. From there I bounced around and picked off one here and there. In the evening I tied on the rattlebait and picked up two more. Total of 14 fish for the day and most between 22-25 inches. Definitely the best day size wise I have ever had. I have never seen an area with so many fishermen and so heavily pressured. Hundreds of boats out during the day, and it was starting to get busier when I left with the night guys getting on the water. Shore fishermen everywhere too. Still no 30 inchers, but there is always next year.

Nice catches Matt! Some of those girls have some major girth, well done.
If you're fishing slow and not catching anything, fish slower.

Cool stuff! Nice to see a few walleye reports. Stout looking fish.

Have participated in the DePere mob a couple times & it was definitely a circus, but I also have to say I was amazed at how courteous & considerate almost everybody seemed to be. Everyone seemed to work together to maintain a bit of order. At least the couple times I went. Hard to believe people can do this only a few hours from chicago.

Those are still very nice sized Wally's. Isn't there a strict regulation on the Wally's right now on the Fox or Greenbay?

Yes, one fish 28 inches for Depere during the spawn. I have never mounted a fish, but if I caught a 30 inch prespawn female I would have to think hard about it.

Some awesome tank walleyes Matt. Prior to last year I’d never caught a Walleye over 4 and I was underwhelmed with Walleye fights. Get over 4 and it’s a whole different story...so you had to have a blast

really solid fish and outing. I'm sure navigating through that mess was a little unnerving.

I give you lots of credit for doing that. I left mainly because every time I would get out of the pack and start a drift it would be about 10 minutes before I had boats on my sides casting across my bow. It was silly. I idled back to the ramp eventually and almost ran over a whole yellow bird spread because the boat did not have any lights on the birds. There were more boats putting in at 9pm then getting off. Just insane!

Detroit river can get pretty crowded for its famous walleye run as well. There though everyone is purely on the vertical jigging program in fairly deep water so you don't get any casting across bow issues.

I have done a Saturday night once, but usually I aim for midweek nights and I find a lot less traffic, than say a daytime outing on a weekend.

That is a great day. I have had weeks in Canada without that kind of success.
