Driftless - Richland County (pic dump)

Sep Wed 30, 2020 7:49 pm

Drove out Friday evening and pitched tents in the dark. New area to us and we had plans of trekking up some new creeks in search of some colored up fall trout. Hoppers and hippie stompers worked well for us. Didn't even bother tying up any nymphs or scuds as most of the creeks were too weedy. They would have worked well in the deeper pools and sections we encountered but cutting and reattaching didn't seem like the hassle. On the conventional side, panther martin size 6 caught a bunch and moved a few large fish. Lost one or two biggens that hurt. Never ran into any Brookies, surprised because we fished the headwaters of a few creek systems. The bigger fish are definitely moving into those areas preparing for the spawn. Never ran into an olive hatch though we were prepared. Chatted with some other fisherman I ran into. Emergers, scuds, and of course pink squirrels round out what was working. Lots of fish, Moon Man, and coffee. Pretty sure we are no longer welcome in Viola after that weekend . "Friendly locals" and other people who just like to stop and chat. Got an invite to fish some private access from a land owner which was a nice gesture. Trying to maybe squeeze one more trip back to the area before the season closes, thinking Columbus Day weekend.

Nice. Scenery reminds me of Apple Canyon a bit, very pretty.

Pretty browns and fall scenery, almost like being there!

The fry pan answered one of my questions. The other one is what is that floating contraption?

Grems - my buddy wanted to eat some and we had one take a hopper to the gill rakers that got promptly bonked the second day. Kept another to fill out a meal of pork chops and chicken. The trout tasted great imo though I only ate a little, not a fan for the most part. I noticed the barrels read corrosive and I thought I'd be needing to call the sheriff. Keeping my feet wet, I realized it was a raft of sorts with paddles and stuck my phone in the air to take the pic. Local farmer's kids must have put it together.

That sounds like a good trip with some good size browns csight. The home made watercraft is great. I love seeing that kind of stuff.

Hard to believe driftless zone fishing is so good but the fishing masses dont pursue it, including myself. If it was only a little closer for round trip days...
