Kish 10/11

Do you fish the Kish?

Kish 10/11

South Branch
Wanted to sneak in a trip before end of year.
Skinny water section crystal clear water (too clear)...
Long day.
Caught at least 25 smallies. 4 for 6 on pike.
No fish of notable size but none were expected (based on my experience with this section).
1 immature eagle
2 mink
1 jet black animal running down a tree in a wooded section (perhaps a fat farm cat but looked like a little cub - of course not though)
No humans seen in 6.5hrs of fishing. Nice.

That's outstanding! I really regret not hitting that river when I was at NIU.

I keep telling myself I'm going to make there someday. Now thanks to your reports, I don't have to. I just enjoy your pics and stories instead.

Great job especially since the cold weather and colder water did a number on the bite back home. Nice adventure!
To fish or not to fish......that's a stupid question.

Somehow the year flew by. Aside from winter I don't think I fished with any WCF folks except once (Keith Wacky). Thought I'd hook-up with more people either planned or by accident. Anyways, if any WCF'ers I know ever want to do the Kish just let me know and we can work something out this year or next year. Love fishing with people or by myself, I like pointing out spots on the water before you run into them. When the Kish runs clear it's pretty neat. Its cool to see species besides gamefish. A lot of baitfish I can't recognize. Several species of suckers, cool to see them schooling together in hyper groups. Cool to see the flighty Quillbacks those are easy to recognize. 100-120 miles roundtrip from Schaumburg depending where I go. I may have one last trip for Kish this year and that would be north branch and about a 4.5mile stretch (new to me never been there). More water volume opportunity for bigger fish.

What baits were you using? I fish the North Branch occasionally, and have never pulled those numbers. For me the late Fall bite with the colder water temps has been a bad combo.

Lots of different things depending on clarity, spot, time of year, etc

- I try and match baitfish color schemes
- I try and match crayfish color schemes

This may mean stickbaits, swimbaits/twisters on jigs, craws on jigs, squarebills, etc

I throw Spinner type baits sometimes also.

Been eager to get back to Kish and try it in even colder weather however difficult with length of drive and shorter days. I need a long day (available time) for how I like to fish it. I was going to hit North Branch in October but where I wanted to fish is prime hunters zone.

Missed this the first time around. Great pics! Man, that water is clear!

Bummed I never made it out there this year. I really like that little river. Maybe next year! Would like to yak down to the confluence, but I've never made it any further than cherry valley.
