Pop up redirects

Postby joetrain » Feb Wed 21, 2018 2:13 pm

Lately I have been getting a number of pop up adds that state I have won an Amazon gift card. I notice it only on my iphone6. Is this a site issue or my phone? I clear my cache and cookies and have cleared all website data by going to settings<safari<website data<advanced.

I'm thinking it is a site issue because some other forums that I am on I am not experiencing this. You tech savvy younguns got any advice?

I think it's your phone. Why don't you download another browser & try that?

Phone. I used to get the same thing on my Galaxy S6 and once i got a new phone it stopped. I ran virus checks and whatever on the phone to no prevail, so troubleshooting I'm pretty worthless.

This is typically a combination of items related to the browser, cookies, cached data, and the site and its advertisements. Those Amazon ads are simply advertisements, and nothing more. Try using a different browser on the phone if you can.

Ok thanks. So not necessarily a different search engine but a completely different browser from Safari?

I've been getting the same thing lately. Only on my phone. As others posted earlier it started as something that would only happen when I was on LTE but now it happens a lot even when I'm on wifi. It isn't normal amazon ads. It is a phishing attack from someone emulating Amazon and it is based on the software from this site and not something on the phone other than possibly being triggered by some device fingerprinting involving cookies.

Download Chrome for iOS. Things can pop up through it but I've never seen that on this site.

Other sites yes, but they are a bit more....ahem...adult.

I hate to add another thing to the growing list of things to be jealous of me of, but no problems here with anything like that.

It's not typically virus related. It's rarely a phishing scam either. We just went through this on another message board I frequent for hockey. It's entirely related to the site and the advertisements on it. Most are just a marketing ploy to get you to take surveys that add you to email lists and such for advertisement emails, product recommendation emails, etc. Just download a pop-up blocker for safari and it'll take care of it. Find a well rated one.

Sorry guys, have no control over that stuff, but indeed there are various apps that take care of that sort of thing.

I have yet to find a malware app that stops or removes the bogus amazon pop up and it’s happening way more often and seriously, only when I’m on WCF

The screenshots included here are both Apple, I use android and have yet to have the issue (knock on wood). Curious if everyone having the issue is an iPhone user. I've had that happen on plenty of sites on my phone, normally clickbait garbage, but never here. And a majority of my posts are made from a work computer that has never had that issue.

If Android users are getting it, I suggest trying Chrome instead of the basic browser. I rarely get ads using that.

Knock on wood but I haven't gotten anything like those. I have a droid phone but normally check everything out on my iPad. I do get ads on most of the pictures and the top of the post though.

I'm a fan of the Brave browser on both laptop/PC as well as my android phone. I switch between that and Firefox (the new Firefox is very nice).

https://brave.com/

Also, I've mentioned it in previous posts, look into using NoScprit add on for FireFox. This automatically blocks all scripts (i.e. BS pop up adds, etc) and you enable things one by one. A little tedious in the beginning, but allows complete control of your browsing experience. I get 0 pop ups on this site and/or most sites.

Call me crazy but I've been saying for years now (I have witnesses) that all of this shit will eventually cause people to give up on all things internet and go back to writing shit down on paper. I know it will be a huge inconvenience for some of us but it will also save our sanity.

BTW - I was over at the DPR this afternoon wetting a line and noticed a young lady sitting in a tree that overhangs the river writing in a notebook. Almost fell in the river I was so shocked. She looked deep in thought - a look most people don't get starring at phones - so I didn't bother her.
