Important Security Update

Postby VSAdmin » Jun Tue 05, 2018 2:55 pm

Great News!

We are happy to announce we are improving security across our network and adding Secure Sockets Layer or SSL to the site. This means going forward you'll see Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS); the secure version of HTTP, the protocol used to send data between your browser and the website that you are connected to. This means all communications between your browser and the website will have another layer of encryption. We take the security of your data seriously so updates like this do happen from time to time. There is no downtime or major issues anticipated in this change. If you do notice anything about the site operating not as it should please make sure we are the first to know. You can send a PM to this account with details and we can investigate. Thanks, and if you have any questions about this let me know.

It's a encryption protocol. Keeps you protected from certain types of attacks online

So when I make a post, I get this message on my phone. The post goes through fine, though. I found when I delete the "s" from https, it'll take me to the page that it should have.

Yeah, my posts go through but every time I am then taken to a page that says:

An error occurred during a connection to www.windycityfishing.com:80. SSL received a record that exceeded the maximum permissible length. Error code: SSL_ERROR_RX_RECORD_TOO_LONG

The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because the authenticity of the received data could not be verified.

Please contact the website owners to inform them of this problem.

Yeah, my posts go through but every time I am then taken to a page that says:

Turn on TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 in Advanced settings and try connecting to https://www.windycityfishing.com:80 again. If this error persists, it is possible that this site uses an unsupported protocol or cipher suite such as RC4 (link for the details), which is not considered secure. Same. I have to open the site in another window to get on. WTF? Getting to be to much of a hassle to care about logging on lately.

Same for me. Every time I hit "submit" either for a forum or a PM, I get that.

I am not sure you helped us move forward.

Please tell us you are working on a fix.

The problem is that at times the site tries to direct you to https://www.windycityfishing.com:80 which is the HTTP port vs 443 which is the HTTPS port. Remove the :80 from the URL and you will be good until it happens again. You don't have to replace the :80 with :443 since 443 is the default HTTPS port.

Well, it still happens after posting. I dunno, technology and I don't play well together.

I just keep two tabs open with the site, then when I post to a thread, I close that tab, open the next one and it's ok. I won't pretend to know why.

Although I figure it has to do with VS running things. FWIW- They were hacked a few times recently on the WC site.

Jason
It seems no one is listening to our complaints. I sent a PM as requested and no response. They want our participation so as to generate ad revenue. Yet they seem deaf to our request to fix a problem they created. A fix has even been identified by a user (thanks DasGoby). Any chance you can use whatever influence you have with these folks?

I agree. This is likely a trivial config error that should be fixed.

In the mean time folks the work around is simple. If you find yourself with this error just look for and remove :80 from the URL in the address box of your browser and then hit enter.

But every time after I make a post is tiresome and frustrating.

Maybe it's a subliminal message meant to get us away from the computers and out fishing more?

Seems that since this change I have a myriad of issues. Sometimes a post or reply just flat doesn't work. Sometimes a post or reply gets duplicated.

I figure somehow they got the kanuten valve crossed with the chronosynclastic infundibulum.

Check the flux capacitor.

For what the VSAdmin calls "Great News"; their update is a POS. They said to PM if issues. Have done so. THEY ARE NOT LISTENING! If I say it louder, will that help, or should I just stop posting? What will happen to the cash generation then?

So today I log in after just a couple days, and it shows me that there were 1159 new posts since my last visit. Uhhhhh, what? Is this part of the security update or another software miscue.

I know some of you guys are real chatty kathys, but I don't believe I've ever seen the site that busy to get over 1000 posts in a couple days.

Plus the damn e80stx:fukyou/goawaydontpostanymore error still happens after every post I make.

I just saw a PM regarding some of the issues. Apparently I do not get notifications anymore. Has anyone reached out to Jason. Although he sold the site I believe he still has some oversite or at least the connections to get the issues looked at. It is a shame the new ownership is unresponsive but the reality it this site is a drop in the sand to their portfolio.

With all those logins though, you'd think a "were aware of the issue and working to resolve it" copy and paste blanket message would come through. Whether or not you really are is another story.
