whats coming from your speakers?

Postby urbanHog312 » Sep Thu 06, 2018 4:04 pm

We're approaching that time of the year when I spend a lot of hours in my truck while en route to deer camp. I love that feeling I get when I pull out of my office on two wheels, cabin loaded with fishing and hunting gear, ready for a solid weekend in the outdoors with friends and family. Its been a lot of cubs radio the last few years but these are my top 3 albums to blast while I'm taking corners through the bean fields of Illinois.

1. Turnpike Troubadors - A long Way from Your Heart
2. The Steel Woods - Straw in the Wind
3. Cody Jinks - Adobe Sessions

How about you?

in my single days, when my buddy and me would depart for the north woods either on an open water or ice fishing excursion it was always anything on the Thin Lizzy "Dedication" album, but mostly Boys as Back in Town, Whisky, Jailbreak and then we'd move onto Blind Melon's self titled album... those were the good old days

My fishing music? I usually fish with someone, so none is playing at those times.

On the ride to wherever I'm going it always varies. Sometimes country. Sometimes Eminem and other rap. Sometimes classic rock. All depends on my mood.

It's flattering to think anyone would care about my musical tastes but here goes. If I'm driving around town my radio goes between The Score, METV-FM and WBEZ.

On longer trips my iPod (no comments from the peanut gallery) has somewhere north of 3500 songs that range from Abigail Washburn to Steam (Nah, nah, hey-hey, good-bye) with all sorts of stuff in between.

Things that come to mind in no particular order: Beatles (of course), Stones, Van Morrison, The Chieftains, Carmina Burana, Dave Matthews, Doobies, Eagles, Steely Dan, Gordon Lightfoot, Bill Monroe (real country), Louis Armstrong, Gladys Knight, Springsteen, The Who, Wilco, Tom Rush, The Temptations, Three Dog Night, Marvin Gaye, Steve Goodman and it goes on & on. I have eclectic taste. I keep the iPod on Shuffle.

Nothing new. I am primarily listening to sports and history podcasts. And I listen to a lot of podcasts. If I am going on a trip 4-5 hours away I will relisten to one of Dan Carlin's series on either WWI or the Eastern Front of WWII. He has some other excellent podcasts that I will cycle through during the year. When I am listening to music while fishing or driving I have specific fishing playlists with a lot of Johnny Cash, The National, Ryan Adams, Son Volt, Wilco- more country-ish stuff. If am biking or running I have much faster music in the alternative and metal genre.
I love the smell of Powerbait in the morning!

Hmmm this is an interesting post one of the few posts that Rambler and I might be on the same page in music with a few he mentioned. +2 the Bill Monroe is real country music and +3 with Wilco and to a few groups and musicians’ other folks mentioned above.

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 really killed off a lot of good and interesting music on the radio. Thank god for unlimited data, pod casts, documentaries and full albums on YouTube! I feel a kindred spirit with Harvey Keitel shooting the car radio, but it has nothing to with Daryl Strawberry ending the game.

I’m all over the board with music depending on my mood.

Thank you Rambler. I kind of thought that your tastes in music would hold some names that I am familiar with. After I came out of my drug induced fog in 1984 I stopped listening to current artists. Oddly enough I now prefer music from the 40s and 50s along with old school gospel hymns.

There's not enough bandwidth on the internet to type all the diversity of what I like and listen to. Metallica to Mozart. Funk to punk. Progressive rock to EDM.

Two rules: ZERO rap and very little country.

My fog ended in the Fall of 1982.

Forgot to mention Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Woody Herman, Glenn Miller and many others from the big band era. And then there's Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, Mahler, etc, etc.

But here's the real question: If you were stranded on a desert island & could listen to only 1 artist who would it be?

I download/stream a lot of live shows that sound interesting. I've been on a little bit of a 90s rock kick lately after seeing Foo at Wrigley. Toss in a little SRV and Muddy Waters and that's pretty much the soundtrack to my life the last 6 months.

Most of my 2.7 mile commute to and from work is in silence, sometimes when I have the radio on, it's WBBM 780 AM- usually to try and catch the weather report.

I don't commute many places in the winter, and in summer, I'm on a motorcycle a lot, so don't really care to listen to the radio. At home, I listen to the free Pandora station. When I play any vinyl or CDs, it's mostly Metallica, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Zepplin, Joan Jett, Flaming Lips, Madam X, Smashed Gladys, The Runaways etc... I refuse to listen to any country or rap.

Good find. Due to the massive pop & country culture that ultimately votes for the contestants, he probably won't win. The absolute best young artists by their very nature of being counter culture and anti-establishment, wouldn't get caught dead on any of the talent TV shows currently out there.. so it's good to see someone who actually plays an instrument and writes music.

These types of artists actually have a shot at winning now. The show isn't what it used to be, it has evolved a ton. Instruments are allowed as early as the initial auditions now. They're looking for more of the complete package than the pop stars they used to look for. And the judge panel is easily the best one I've seen on the show. And I've pretty much always watched the show since it started.(Don't hate on me for it, I just like music/artists/musicians) Luke, Katie, and Lionel just work well together, and they're all likable people.

Sounds more like what's not coming from your speakers. Reminds me - used to work with a guy who had a band. He gave me a bunch of CDs of their stuff. Put it on my iPod. Then took it all off. :D Not saying they're bad, just not really my cup of tea.

On the other hand my son's in a heavy metal band. Went to see them play. His wife brought ear plugs. What a wonderful girl he married. :D
