Lake Arlington 7/17/16 Hybrid bass?

Postby JasonN » Jul Sun 17, 2016 9:04 pm

There wasn't a chance in hell i'd have woken up this morning, think i'm gonna go to Lake Arlington and catch a hybrid bass, but I believe that's what happened.

Fished from shore from 5pm-6:45pm; overcast - sunny; temps in the 80's; strong west winds.

Was a last minute decision to get out to Lake Arlington, which I haven't fished for a few years. Funny enough too, it was one of the original lakes when I started the site years ago. Just brought some simple tackle and tied on a spinnerbait. Within a few minutes I had a feisty 17" largemouth bass. Kept walking around and landed a few more bass. Then, my bait got slammed and drag went out. What the heck was it? Kinda figured it was a carp but the fight was not carp like. This thing was really something. Then I see it and in disbelief, it's, I believe, a hybrid bass! What the hell is it doing in Lake Arlington? Been searching around online and was only able to find one thing that from another angler from 2013 who says they stocked hybrids in there. Unreal. This one was about 21-22".

In total caught 5 largemouth bass and the hybrid in about an hour's time. One that sun popped out from the clouds, the action was over.

A wiper! Wow, nice work. Overcast and windy makes good spinnerbaiting. Great to see a Lake Arlington post. It's just down the street from me, but I've never been there. Heard nothing but bad reports from there and never figured it was worth it. It's on the list now.

Pretty awesome Jason, its amazing how less stressful it is not dealing with a yak and standing on shore and fishing....and getting results! Striper is such a nice catch I wonder why they're stocked in more lakes. I wonder if they're easy to raise in the fish farms.

Wow! Very cool, i went to l.a. for the first time ever a few weeks ago and i was very surprised at the size of the lake and the lack of fisherman. Seems like that lake could have potential.

Awesome catch! I was out there earlier in the season and happened to speak with someone from the park district who was out on a kayak. He said they stocked the hybrids a few years ago to control the shad population. He also said to enjoy them while we can because they will be dying off in the next few years, and since they're hybrids and won't reproduce, once they're gone...they're gone. I only got a dink LM on that outing but did see an impressive sized dead hybrid washed up on shore.

Ahh thanks for the info, ccorso! I figured it was probably something like that. And Fishdank, you're right, it's underfished. You'll see a few guys here and there, many with bobbers or bottom fishing, and kids too, but not a lot of regular anglers.

Very cool. Wipers and Stripers fight hard. I've caught a ton of them out of Heidecke. Usually while fishing for crappie... which makes for some fun and excitement on a medium light rod and 4-6lb fluoro.

Awesome hybrid, Jason. Must've been a nice fight.
