New here - shore fishing question

From the south suburbs to the northwest suburbs, the Des Plaines River provides some excellent fishing opportunities.

New here - shore fishing question

Postby strikequeen » Jun Sun 28, 2020 1:28 pm

Hello all, my husband and I love to get out and fish as much as possible around the area, however we're fishing from shore wherever we go and would like to try fishing the DPR. In your experience, is this possible to fish from shore for bass/pike or is a boat necessary? If so, do you recommend any lures for this type of shore fishing (if you're willing to share!). We live in Evanston so have been making all of the usual FP lake rounds, usually make an annual trip back down to Champaign where my husband grew up to fish down there as well just to change up the scenery, so trying something new during this summer sounded like a welcome change

Hmmm, Fishing ccfp lakes and ponds will test your character and fortitude but will make you stronger as Nietzsche said. Imo look at all these retention ponds in the new suburbs north and west.

Wacky worms, Texas rigged weighted or weightless rigs, chatterbaits, popper type surface lures is all you need to chase dow a few pond bass in the summer.

No doubt others will take issue with some that I've mentioned but it's a good.

Welome to WCF. I shore fish the DPR regularly so I guess it's doable.

In-line spinners, spin baits, swim jigs & jig & twisters (Keitech paddle tails are good) work best for me. If you're fishing an area without much current try buzzbaits.

Good luck!
Keep calm and fish on...

Waders are a great option.

Welcome to the sight. I love your screen name.

The DPR is fishable from shore all over the place. Google maps, bug spray and good boots are a must. It won’t be like a walk in the park but if you are willing to try you will find access. There really aren’t any secret areas. Look on google maps and you will see where the river is in relation to forest preserve areas and bridges. It really is just a matter of exploring and realizing that not every spot will produce.

Forgot to mention - chatterbaits are good too.
