Well i am not new to catfish fishing, but all i used before was liver and shrimp. Liver falls off the hook too fast and shrimp is expensive. I am wondering which punch bait should i get, i have read about benny roberts sure shot, cj, and danny kings. Is there a particular one that works better here on IL? I usually fish skokie lagoons for channels.

I've never been a fan of those types of baits. If you have an issue with the liver falling off the hook, try wrapping it in cheese cloth and tying it with a little thread before hooking.

Never fished for cats at the goons but have caught many monster cats throughout Illinois. Everyone was a nightcrawler. In fact I just returned from Hayward and caught a mixed bag. Largemouth, perch, crappie, Northern and a Muskie, yup all on a nightcrawler!

I used to do good with cheap hotdogs, like ballpark franks.

RonG uses neighborhood children as cut bait from what I hear. 8)

What did you do with the kid?
Took him catfishing. Used him for cutbait.

I just recently tried liver (beef not chicken) and had amazing results when crawlers weren't working, but I hear ya about keeping it on the hook.

I don't see shrimp as being expensive. Go buy a 2 pound bag of froze medium size shrimp at sam's club and it will last a long long time.

I know many people have good results with Sonny's but it is smelly, a pain to find, and works best with specialized tackle. With crawlers, liver, shrimp, and hot dogs you can just use any old hook and weight that you find appropriate.
