After going out tonight and talking with my good buddy I tie flies for so he can target snook down in Florida. I decided to do the bass streamer of a Clouser Minnow with bead eyes. I'm suggesting after Xmas we can start tying? If not, I will make time before then. What do you all think???

If I buy a vise I would like to be a part of this.

Where do you guys order your materials?

what books would you recommend for a beginner?
Number one book i'd recommend is "Charlie Cravens Basic Fly Tying" , nothing better for the new tyer.

I have numerous fly shops out here, so i rarely ever order anything, got wayyyy too much stock already :)
However ... Feather-Craft and J. Stockard are the only ones i deal with if i can't talk Charlie into special ordering for me.

Well, since we only have... 7 tyers, how about Feb 1 for a deadline ? Plenty of time to tie a couple dozen - thats less than 1 a day !

So the Updated Swap is this :

Theme : Bass Streamers

Deadline for submissions : Feb 1, 2012

The Players :

JWcustomflies
SJS
Wrenchin n Fishin
1080tommy
cmiller
brookfieldangler (?)
Hoffman (?)

Number of flies : with this small group, how about 3 flies per tyer ( you'll have a backup on the water plus pattern sample )
With 7 tyers, each tyer will submit a total of 18 flies - one color/pattern/size.
Swap Master will divide the flies and re-send them to the tyers via USPS.

-YOU- need to : Package your flies well
Use an old flybox, or similar, big enough to accommodate the returning batch of flies safely.
Enclose a self-addressed envelope, postage paid, with your flies - big enough to hold your box !
Each tyer will receive sets of 3 flies from each tyer in return.

To make things easy on postage, do one of you want to take the responsibility of recieving flies so you all don't have to send them out here to Colorado ? If not, i can do it no porblem - normal for Den - Chi is about 3-4 days.

Hoffman, jet us know if you are going to be able to do this, glad to have another !

JW can you recommand a quality vise in say the $50 - 150 range? I would mostly be tying buss bugger type flys.

BTW thanks for the help with all the newbie questions.

JW didn't you have a vice for sale?
Id o , my old DanVise with extension arm - $50. I dont have a pedestal base for it, bot you can get one for $10. Heck of a vise for cheap/newbies, also plenty good for professional use as well. Jaws are excellent.

Lets see.... Vises are sort of a niche thing in a way - totally depends on what you plan to tie, how big your hands are ( sausage fingers) etc..

Id reccomend the 720 Vise of course, but its retail price is double your high limit. If you are a fan of Dry flies ( parachutes/ extended bodies ) this is THE vise for you especially !

For $50 - $150, you are kind of limited. At your high end, the Renzetti Traveller would top the list, as would Peak Vises ( colorado made) . Near the middle range is the Anvil Apex Vise and DanVise. The low end, is low end Thompson style vises, usually found is the Wapsi kits, which are usually total crap.

The lst of what NOT to buy... Dyna-King - frustrating and bulky. Griffin - not very stable and wear fast. Regal - best used as a hook shooter.

If you plan to tie a lot, id highly recommend buying the best vise you can, you'll not regret spending the extra coin.

I'd build a few of these, and enter the swap if any one is interested.

..... I haven't fished much with streamers much and don't know how it will work, but I have caught my largest bass on a epoxy minnow which has a similar profile.

Let me know if it's a go. I'll spice up the basic design to the best of my abilities. (glass rattles, custom eyes ext., I'll do my best....).

I don't know, out of the guys who have already committed, would any of you be interested in this fly joining the swap?
