Got a chance to get out and wade a new section of the DPR this past weekend that I've been wanting to try for some time. Pretty much got the skunk for the first several hours but just before leaving I decided to try some topwater and pulled these two nice guys out. These were my first DPR smallies and was impressed by how healthy they are looking.

They are known to be more active in the far far south of the DPR. I actually caught a smallie near LYons in March when the warm weather was hitting us. I was shocked to see that. Usually if anything pike will bite but to see smallies thats fun. Great job man. The DPR is starting to Produce all kinds of fish, pike like always but smallies are showing up , large mouth the last few years, and walleye are in there from time to time. Cant wait to get out soon. Im thinking of trying near HWy 55 where its junction of Kankakee river almost joins/

I think the eye's are more common than we think.... There's a good sauger population in there too. It's great to see it rebounding, but it still has a pretty long ways to go.

Anytime you see smallmouth in a formerly polluted river is a good indicator. There is some pretty good habitat for them from Burr Ridge all the way downstream to the IL mouth. A number of areas with rock, wood, riffles, pools and current. It's all there... just a matter of fish making their way back in and utilizing it.
