So I've been reading on wcf and I've seen people get mad about being called a "weekend angler".i think I would consider myself a weekend angler even though I fish almost every day. I don't have a professional's knowledge on fishing. I do have a lot of tackle. So maybe I am just a regular angler or a "weekend angler" just wondering what is your guy's opinion about weekend anglers or the different types of anglers. Not trying to start a fight but I just need some opinions on the "different types" of anglers.
Thanks!

Weekend angler is kind of a dumb reference, but I would equate it to anyone who does not sustain their livliehood through fishing. ie professional tournament angler, guide, fishing show host. Although the term is broad, I don't think it insinuates angler skill level, or lack thereof.

This is my take as well. If you don't make your living from fishing then you are a "weekend" fisherman.

Worm and bobber kinda guys?
Thats what I would say.

When I think of "Angler" I think of active fishing with some skill or thought. Reading currents, knowing temps and pressure, or trying to. Bobber fishing is what I did about twice when I was a kid. Fishing didnt stick, lobbing a bobber in and sitting down for hours at a time didnt appeal to me and I thought that is what fishing was.
30 years later I give it another shot and realize what "fishing" or "angling" really is. And it is quite different. To me at least.

I agree, there are people that go to the fish or on the other hand you have fishermen that expect the fish to come to them. When the fish don't come to them they move to the spots where people are actually catching fish and they give you a deer in the headlights look  after seeing you use a plastic lure instead of live bait. If I had a dime for every time I have seen that happen...

Just because someone throws a bobber everyonce in a while doesn't mean they don't know their stuff. I have ran into some old guys who were the only ones catching down at Government pier who were using nightcrawlers under a bobber. Talked fishing with them and they know you can get a bite chucking a spoon but still fishing is less exausting and gives them time to chat and admire the scenery. (Yes, Waukegan has scenery.)

So they are not anglers because they are not trowing spoons like the rest of the zombie hordes?

It honestly takes as much skill to catch a fish on a bobber as a wacky rigged senko or reeling in a spinnerbait, catching fish on a bobber is a staple of fishing. I have seen guys with bait casting gear and $80 tackle bags stuffed to the brim with crap that could barely set their kid's up for bluegill fishing.

It is about catching fish and having fun, there is no need to diss someone who uses a bobber.

In my opinion there are anglers, people following the rules and are respectful to other anglers. Then there are Bucketheads don't follow the rules and show little regard for other people fishing. If you are following the rules, I hope you catch what yuor after :D

If you're a buckethead I hope you catch VD.

Rant over.

Angling is a method of fishing by means of an "angle" (fish hook). The hook is usually attached to a fishing line and the line is often attached to a fishing rod. Fishing rods are usually fitted with a fishing reel that functions as a mechanism for storing, retrieving and paying out the line. The hook itself can be dressed with lures or bait. A bite indicator such as a float is sometimes used.

Angling is a principal method of sport fishing, but commercial fisheries also use angling methods such as longlining or trolling. Catch and release fishing is increasingly practiced by recreational fishermen. In many parts of the world, size limits apply to certain species, meaning fish below and/or above a certain size must, by law, be released.

No matter how ya slice it..... it's all "Angling"

I totally agree. Bobbers are way underused by most fisherman today. Bobbers are a great way to suspend bait in the strike zone and keep it there.

I also agree that there is a lot of thought that goes into effective bobber fishing. You obviously want to think about depth but also want a balanced setup where the bobber is providing just enough flotation to keep the bait and itself up but no more. In moving water you also need to think about how the current is affecting the rig under water.

Lastly, using a bobber doesn't mean chucking your rig out into the middle of the lake and waiting. It can be just as active as any other type of finesse technique like wacky or shaky head.

I LOVE bobber fishing. Coyote and I sit in his boat at LITH and have a blast catching everything putting a leech under a small float. Slip bobbers for walleye and crappie can be the bomb too. Lots of ways to skin a cat. My buddy Yami Master would rather die then use a slip bobber even if I am smoking them on it. Too passive for him.

If you take undersize fish home, if you have dead bluegills from bad hook sets floating around you, if you ask to take someones fish, if you leave your worm container on the floor after fishing, if you fish without a license, if you don't know what your fishing for, if you fish with more than 2 rods at a time and if you don't own your own rod and tackle box then your most likely not a real angler.
