ok, i finally caved! on my trip north my shimano spinning reel and rod flipped out of the boat on the road unknown to me. we went back and found it...destroyed. so, i take the opportunity to go out and buy a shimano baitcaster and berkley rod. spooled up with 30lb braided and headed over to Opeka to cast senkos, just to get used to it a bit and give it a try. went well with my casts getting longer as the hour went by. No birdsnests until my final cast when I try to sail it as far as i could. my question: what line and weight would you experienced baitcasters suggest? I'm having a lot mroe confidence this time around with it, but want to make the learning curve as easy and productive as possible.

lighter line equals farther casts and increased accuracy but is more prone to bird nests. heavier line equals less distance and accuracy but less prone to nesting and if you do, much easier to pick out the nests with heavier line.

i'm a big fan of using the lightest line i can get away with. I got 10lb P-Line copolymer hybrid on my go to accurist setup and really like it.

I got 14lb flouro on the energy pt for bigger baits. i much prefer to use the 10lb accurist setup rather the heavier line energy rig.

Daiwa Tri-Force reel. It's a great deal for the money and I've picked up baitcasting in a hurry. I've been using 30 pound Power Pro braid and haven't gotten a lot of bird's nests. I usually get them after switching from a heavy lure to a light one and vice versa.

Topwater, definitely go with heavier line... maybe mono atleast 15lbs+ with a HEAVY lure like a big jig or something. That'll help you build up confidence, learneing to use a baitcaster with a senko can be some tough stuff especially if it's windy! :D

I own two shimano sahara 2500 reels. It's great having four spools with different kinds of line that fit both reels.

My baitcaster is a Shimano Curado Bantam 5:1 left handed. I've had it for two or three years now and still love it.

I use Daiwa Exceler 2000 (spining) most of the time. I also have Shimano Curado Bantam but I hardly ever use it.
When I go for muskies,I use Daiwa Luna 300. I just picked up another Luna (Lefthanded) so I can switch around when my arms get tired.

U should have no problem casting senkos, the 5`` senkos weigh 3/8oz alone !
I use 90%baitcaster 10%spinning and if i pick up a pixy or presso that would eliminate spinning altogether! :D
