Has anyone fished the area around the confluence of DPR and Salt Creek? There is a launch right there, and I'm thinking of either launching or taking out in that area... but I have no idea the areas where people are successfully fishing DPR in the posts.

I'm not after any specific fish in particular, just looking to land some and have some fun, and that would be a really convenient place for me.

Sorry for not mentioning it -- I'll definitely be paddling. I have a 11.5' perception acadia that i've heavily modified (rod holders, scotty mount, fish finder, anchor trolly, etc.) So yah, I'm a kayak angler all the way. 8)

I will definitely check out the Stoney Ford launch. Thanks for the tip!

I'm also hoping to drop in and paddle upstream a ways, and then fish my way back (I'd love to find a nearby spot where I can go without worrying about a down-stream pick-up)

I have before and never had much luck.

With that dam removal, that could change. I did do a wade there last summer after they removed the dam when the water was extremely low and clear. Most of the water from the launch to the old dam is pretty shallow and mostly flat rock. There is a cut channel that drops straight down the entire length. If you were going to fish that stretch, I would focus on that channel.

Thanks BrookfieldAngler! Looks like we're in the same area -- anywhere close to Brookfield that you would recommend where I may have better chances?
Not really...With exception of the bend in Riverside, I tend to fish elsewhere.

If you do want to stick close to home though, I would focus on the DPR by the launch at 1st downstream to the Caboose in Hodgkins. There is some good water between those two points that can produce fish when conditions allow. The more you explore that stretch, the more honey holes you'll find.

I should have mentioned, if you can launch there at salt creek and paddle up to lets say, Roosevelt rd or Cermak you will hit some pockets here and there that are notorious Pike hangouts. Not super scenic, but lots of bridges and laydowns holding Pike and other bonus game specie. Remember on the DPR go bright colored on presentation and don't be afraid to go big.

If you like staying close to home, then spend sometime exploring both those launches. You will get skunked time to time, but you will be rewarded for your efforts with nice fish here and there while picking up a pattern or two that will only make your future outings that much more fun.

I'm not a stranger to getting skunked (many of the Texas waters I fished when I lived there were often 'all or nothing') -- I love catching fish, but I also just really love getting out on the water. Especially since it is so close to home, I'm thinking I may just explore and see if I can get anything to hit. As long as the currents are normal (or at least normal compared to what I've paddled in there before, without fishing gear) I should be able to get up pretty far without too much difficulty. I'd love to find a few pike!! That'd take me right back to my Boundary Water trips in Norther Minnesota :D

I'm not opposed to hitting other waters a bit farther away, too, if it means significantly better action. Busse Lake looks interesting, as well of a number of places up that way.

Guess it is time to explore!

Been out a few times this year @ 1st and Ogden ave and fished from the boat launch to Ogden ave. Haven't caught anything yet :(. Used jerk baits, inline spinners, and a chatter bait. I did see one guy out on a boat a few weeks ago, said he caught a smallie. Its really a hit or miss there if your fishing from shore.

Thanks for the report ccfish! I'm fishing from a kayak, so I am not as tied down as fishing from the bank, and hopefully that will allow me to get to water that is a bit more lively.

^Like I said, fish that channel. It's virtually impossible to fish it from shore unless your fishing a bottom rig with a heavy weight

havent fished that confluence since they removed the dam it used to be a big mud flat up that way stony ford southward will give you better options in my opinion but i honestly havent been that way in a few years the bend in riverside was good but well known therefore crowded at times ive had good crappie action between joliet rd and 47th st but there are several spots you can launch at in the southern part of the river each place hides its own suprises use google maps to plan your attack find interesting spot and go for it
