I'm a sort of Newbie to the braided lines and have a question regarding knots and leaders.
What is the best way to attach a mono leader to Power Pro line so the knot does not catch on the guides? How long of a leader do you tie?
I will fish with Revo SX baitcaster loaded with a 20#

Thanks,

I do not know the best knot to use, but am also wondering. :) I could see a mono leader on spinning gear for finesse fishing. I only really use my baitcasters for heavy baits/heavy line, or pike fishing. Both of which send me the other way to either no leader, or a steel leader, respectivley.

A lot of guys do this for the invisibility factor of flourocarbon and they report good success. Why does the blood knot sound correct?

I don't do it since I've had knot problems over the years and I don't want to complicate things with 2 knots. Flourocarbon and a double improved clinch knot works for me. Good fishing.

Try a surgeon knot.
Lay the lines over each other with long ends away from each other.

Basically an overhand knot and you feed the line thru twice.
I use it for all leaders..

There might be a better one but none easier.

The last two years I have really gotten into experimenting with flurocarbon leaders. I started doing it at Lake Geneva when I noticed that I was not getting bit as much as my partners that were using straight mono. I switched it up and started doing really well with it. I started with P-line, but I did not like the knot strength and ended up using gamma, which I was impressed with. This was for deep water live bait fishing.

This year I started doing it even more after again noticing in the late summer and fall that the guy in the back of the boat was getting more bites on mono when we were finesse fishing. I started using the fluro leader for that too and my bite ratio increased dramatically. For some reason I have not had to adapt this in the early spring or summer. The fish seem to hit all the same. Who knows though, I may have even had better days if I would of tried it. I really used to laugh at the notion and think of it as a waste of time until I saw the difference in front of my own eyes.

I tie the blood knot for finesse fishing which can be time consuming. The knot strength is very good though and the transition point is all but invisible. There are other knots that work, but that is the one I am most comfortable with.

I've got a question for you - why would you want to attach a mono leader to PP? I know some guys that do it, I just never understand why...
Reason 1. The braided lines cost $$$, so if I use a 12 to 15 lb. leader on 20 lb. braid I wont loose any braid when I break off.

Reason 2. For invisibility. I am not getting as many bits with power pro as I do using the mono or flourcarbon line

yea blood knots ARE TOUGH! especially out on the water.

try a nail knot? ( what i use to tie on my fly line to leader, and goes thru tiny eyes of fly rod pretty well)

20 pound power pro also seems kinda light. but i guess that is my opinion.

i never really mess with the leaders. so im not really much help. sorry.

I just bring different rod and reel set ups spooled with different line for different presentations.

jaypee

I have not tried the surgeon or the blood knot. I was told that only a select few knots should ever be tied with braided line because they can slip right out. I am not very good with knots and I hope to learn a few more over the winter. I recently learned the double improved clinch, but I use the palomar for almost all lures (probably not a leader though). I know that the paomar and the double improved clinch are safe with braided line.

For me its all about getting bit more often. This sounds crazy, but I have tied the leader unto 4lb Fireline and noticed the difference and ulitmately caught more fish.

On the other hand though, it does not make much sense to use if for reaction type baits. The one exception being that musky guys are starting to use very heavy fluro in place of the standard leaders. Normally though, a bait that is fast moving or erractically worked is going to trigger a reaction strike, and a subtle difference in line visibility is not going to make a difference.

I'm a big Fan of the "Blood Knot", But I am faster at Tying a "Nail Knot" wich over Laps the Main Line. Sometimes time can produce fish as well. That's why I go with the "Nail Knot" as it is truly strong as well, I have tied a Nail Knot so many times while fly fishing the Rivers. I can almost do it without looking. :D

Practice makes Perfect

Before you head out, rig and tye up at the house, take your time to make sure it's done correctly and is really strong with no abrassions to the line.
