Thanks to everyone who came out on a beautiful morning back at Deep.

Many many fish were caught with a few catching a few species. I know I went through a ton of plastics and maybe caught every fish under 14" limit. Definitely had a blast but the keepers were hard to find. Early morning topwater bite was on fire with many dinks to be found also. Bite got even more rough 2nd half but we were able to bring two more in. 1lb separated all that placed in this event.

Total of 29 bass weighed in and only 1 dead fish. Nice job on keeping your bass alive for weigh in and release.

Congrats to those that placed. Look forward to the next one.

1st Place Mike L and Kris D = 9.44lbs

2nd Place Frank (fishing solo) = 8.41lbs

3rd Place Rene and Tom = 7.45lbs

Well done to those of you that can catch keeper these days a Deep Lake.

Tyler has now nicked name me the "Dink Slayer" Like every one that caught shorts all day.

Deep has for some reason become a dink fest. I have my thought but it's frustrating. Maybe its a cycle in
time or maybe Deep Lake has become to popular and that the big fish are going home for dinner for mama.

There are definitely some big girls still out there. I know i spotted a few, and Brooke said he saw one or two tanks as well. For my spots and style of fishing, I think the relative lack of weeds is having a big impact. With the water being so clear, and the weeds not being anywhere near as thick as they used to be, the bigger fish who have been more conditioned can see you coming a mile away. Almost all of my keepers were caught right around the furthest point of the cast away from the boat. If anything was caught after the first 10 ft of retrieving, it was a short. If it hit anywhere near the boat, it was under 10 inches. The lake might be cycling a bit as well, but I think the conditions of the water and the cover are playing a big role as well.

That's exactly what was going on all day with us. Well put Frank.

I had opposite results all my fish were caught on a deeper weed line nothing came shallow. Saw a few schools of 2-3lbers cruising but when cast up into them the shorts were more aggressive and constantly getting to bait before bigger girls.

I would of thought for sure jigs would of been king for bigger bites but that didn't seem to be the case for many.

Of my 6 keepers, 3 were caught within a foot of shore. A 4th was maybe 5 ft off shore. Up shallow, I only caught maybe 4 or 5 shorts. Once I moved deeper, I sifted through many more shorts and the remaining 2 keepers. Didn't really throw the senko shallow, so maybe that is why less shorts came from there, but deeper got shorts on both the senko and topwater.

Congrats to all those landing in the money.

Mike, Tyler and others correct me if I'm wrong but in 2012, I remember tourneys at Deep where 68 and 70 keepers were weighed, granted sometimes we had 20 plus+ anglers fishing. Bob and Hide had a 20lb+ bag in 2012. Zach and Ryan monster bags a few years earlier? 2008 was my first year fishing Deep and I remember a bunch of monsters bass cruising around and tagged into some, I don't recall seeing that many nice bass since then.

Deep Lake 2013 DNR report (only 5 pages)… http://www.lake-villa.org/egov/document ... _92304.pdf A telling quote from this report "There appears to be a fairly steep decline in abundance between 13" and 14" in Length. Declines like this suggest fish are being harvested as they approach 14 inches long." DNR recommendations in this report: 1 15" daily bag limit on bass, no harvest during month of May for bass, "…remove carp whenever possible", among other ideas.

Deep is one of the cheapest and closest places to fish where you can rent a boat. I frequently see people keeping bass, not everyone at Jack's has a C&R mindset about the bass, I don't see that mentality changing anytime soon with some of Jack's customer base.

Have some carp tournaments at Deep and donate the carp to Jack's patrons who want to keep them. Jack is on social media, it could be a win/win longer term if he advertises it.

Back in the early days of the tournament 3 and 4 lb fish were regualry brought to the scales. The other things that come to mind were the abundance of vegetation and the huge amount of baitfish. Sad to hear the lake is going through a rough patch. Ideally you would think all those 11-13 inch fish would be a good base for some great fishing in the next couple years, but who knows?

The weeds are mostly shot compared to the early days and the water is gin clean all over the lake now. I say this in all due respect to Jacks business but I think there are SO many people fishing Deep Lake now. He has amassed some big time money and done massive improvements since I started the tournaments in 2007. That kind of improvements takes large growth in costumers rentals, fishing rentals and cookouts. All in all we may be victims of our own success over the years by turning others not interested in catch and release on to Deep Lake. Something sure has changed.

@Mike: Bow fishing Carp tourny ....nice idea, there are some "monster" carp we saw!!!!! Dog Fish X 10 points :p
